i always change water direct from the tap. the clorine content doesn't appear to be very high. BTW, I stay in Sengkang. Not sure if the water quality is the same elsewhere

Same here in Simei. Have never used a dechlorinator for my tank water. Water change straight from the tap.[:]

    hi inque

most condos and HDB have what they call the roof tank that supplys water to either the upper half of the building, and ground pipings for the lower half, or it can be the whole building via roof tanks. All landed properties are ground pipe supplied.

When water is stored in roof tanks, the chlorine evaporate fast as these tank have a huge surface area, and if i am not wrong, the float switch that activates the refilling equipment are set at 3/4 tank (at least for my place it is)....when this happens the fresh water(with chlorine gets diluted with the reminding water and thus a very very diluted chlorine amount which again will evaporate.

Even should one do a water change just as the tank is filling the chlorine is a very weak solution. Trace element is okay....CO2? I have my doubts....but one things for sure is that the KH and PH value defers quite abit area to area..

You can wait out the chlorine, but you can't wait out the chloramine. Some anti-chlorine remove chloramine... read the bottle.

I've heard about this several times before from different sources too. There may be some truth in it. I once asked a fish shop owner how she keeps her plants healthy when there's no CO2 and she never add fertiliser. These are the plants she sells in pots and not those in her display tank. She said the trick to keep the plants looking good for weeks is to change 100% of the water very frequently, something like once every 3 days.

    ahaz.
ever checked out the PUB listing of their water content?
might surprise that shop owner []

    anyway
keep it looking good = free of algae and not rotting?
    water changes will indeed help
but the plants are likely surviving on their reserves, not on waterborne nutrients
if it can go for months like that, it'll be interesting

    chlorine is toxic to everything.
    just depends on dosage.

take note that some water works use chloramine which needs a week of constant aeration to eliminate. so better use chloramine remover..

chlorine removers remove just bind the chlorine component (ie: they are just sodium thiosulfate)

leaving behind the ammonia component, which may not be a problem in low ph + planted tank. (ie: rapid consumption by plants etc + conversion to ammonium)

I'm not sure what chemical is used to bind ammonia in chloramine removers, I know stuff like seachem's Prime or Tetra's Aquasafe removes chloramine (read the label,,I might have mixed up product)

    hi timebomb

perhaps the shopkeepers water KH parameter is pretty high straight from the tap or she may have coral chips or rocks deco that is pushing KH up. If her lighting is good, she need not have to inject CO2 as the high KH compansates the lack of it.

Inque, yes, chloramine is harmful to fishes too. It's basically chlorine + ammonia.

Yes, for non-planted tanks, make sure you get anti-chloramine that says they will remove/neutralise/etc ammonia.

Haven't seen products labelled as anti-chloramine though. Most are packaged as anti-chlorine or water conditioners and then state on the bottle that they can handle chloramine and ammonia.
