Does 2 fans help to lower water temperature better than 1? I am getting about 28 in the day using 1 fan. I am hoping to lower it to 27 without investing in a chiller.

Hi bro, obviously two fans works better than one. Should not be a problem to lower it to 27 degree celsius. If lower than 27 degree, there is a limit and depend on the ambient temperature of your room or hall. I am using one fan only for my 13 g. tank and have temperature of 25 to 26 degree celsius. Even I try to use 3 fans method still cannot lower any more. That's what I experience.

    Dcwk,

Your temperature can be lowered by 1 or 2 degrees using fan. More fan will speed up the process of cooling but once it reaches the lowest temperature (subject to ambient temperature) it will hover around this temperature.

The drawback for using fan is the rate of evaporation. The water level tends to drop faster. You may have to top up regularly. This will somehow add more uncertainty to water parameters to the tank. (Unless you have huge barrel of aged water readily to use)

    Hmm...just my thoughts.

    Pros and cons always

my 1ft shrimp tank has one fan blowing and temperature is constantly around 24-25C. for my 3ft, the lowest it can get is 26C so far. so maybe one more fan will cool the tank better but theres a limit to it like what others say.

although i get the low temperature, i have to top up every 2 days or so

My fan is turned on during 4 hours of photo in the day and 4 hours at night. Perhaps I will install a second fan and configure it to run during the 4 hours of photo in the day.

Put each fan on one half of the tank.
This way you will maximize the surface area affected by the fan.

the stronger and faster water evaporates, the cooler the water will be. The downside of using fans is of course the need to daily top up water. I used around 4L of water per week on top up and 1x 50-100% water change on my only plants tank.

After installing the second fan, my tank temperature is 27C in the day, 26C in the night. I am satisfied with the result given that I have 200 litres of water.

My tank hovers around there as well, but thats mainly because i have a powerhead which is compensating the water temperature.

usually, once you have equipment in the tank that gives off heat, it tends to bring it up (can't be help).

just a question. does the angle at which the fan is pointing towards the water have any effect on the temperature level? will facing the fan parallel to the water surface bring the temperature lower? this is assuming that it hasn't reached its lowest temperature yet?

~60deg +/-10deg away from water surface should be ideal to achieve better air circulation on water surface.

I second that. Use a sponge filter and it will definetly helps in lowering your tank temp. The higher the wattage the equipment consumes, the more heat it dissipates.

Don't place your tank near to area where the sun shine on it as it will tend to increase the temp as well.

Oh yes, the output of your lightings as well. The higher the wattage of the lightings the more heat it generates too.

Adding to that - the higher the wattage of your canister filter, the hotter the motor head which would transfer the heat to the water passing through.

Get a large AC fan with a high air flow. Based on my experience, it cools the tank better than DC fan.

for my 422, i am using as combination of one AC fan and and a Mr Aqua tornado fan and the lowest i have achieved is 24 degrees with the ambient room temperature around 27 degrees. Some of the folks here have visited my place and saw it for them selves and they can't believe it either.. water top up is around 4 liters every 2 day.
