    Hi all

here is my shrimp tank. need some advise on the filter to use.

    Tank size: 58 x 20 x 30 (LWH) = 34 litres = 9 US gallon

i am using eden 501 (rated 300l/h) now but got a feeling that the flowrate is a bit low. (esp after adding the sponge at the inlet and the reactor at the outlet.) seeing some thread algae behind the rocks...

main problem is I have space constrain,
    now thinking of few alternatives
    1. cannister - eheim classic 2211 (300 l/h)
    2. HOF - eheim liberty 150 (220 to 570 l/h)
    3. use present eden 501, take out reactor and use diffuser instead.

which will be my best bet?

    I will go with (1)

I have a tank like yours and started with eden 501 too. After a while faced the same problem as u and changed to 2211. So far.. not too bad. But if you are going to use a reactor with 2211, maybe it won't be so ideal. i guess using 2211 with difussor shold be better? I notice you scape doesn't have much high plant, so i guess 2211 flowrate ahould be fine.

    hope this help

    thanks wenwei

so you use surface skimmer with 2211 as well? i think that cuts down the flowrate quite a bit as well.

I will suggest that you get a filter with higher flowrate to compensate for the skimmer and reactor. Its better to be over than to be under.

    Hey there,

I have faced these issue before.

Did you know there are smaller skimmers? I know that "most" people use the type of skimmer that you are using, but you should go ask your shop what is the smallest skimmer they have, the one that I purchased is white in colour and it is small for your small tank

This might improve your flow and it may be a cheaper alternative. 18 bucks compared to 85~90 bucks.

Didnt used surface skimmer as i find it too large for my tank. However, like Loopy has said, using a smaller skimmer should help.

can consider 2213 as well. 2211(300L/h) 2213 (450L/h). not much price difference. Less than a red note.

i guess it still depend on what kind of flowrate you preferred. For me, i preferred a little more so i am using a 2213 in my 1.5ft tank.

    thanks loopy and wenwei

I will also prefer to use a more powerful filter if possible but really got space constraint... even if i get 2211, i will have to position it 'lying down' hiding behind the tank

yup, i seen the smaller skimmer. should be a Taiwan brinad. Anyway mine is only 15 bucks. Think I will change it since it is really quite big..

From reading the threads, i believe you are trying to eliminate thread algae by improving your flowrate. All you need to do is simply add another powerhead, maybe 200-300l/h to ensure better flow.

As long as its not a 2 feet tank, an eden works just as well.

By the way, unlike most people who "commonly" use the eden501 for their 1FT setup, i have gone along with a 250-350L/h gex HOF with much better results and flow.

    Hi bro torque

thanks for your advise. actually read your journal before but was so capitvated in the good HC growth that drawn me away from the gex HOF

yeah, was more comfortable with cannister filter initially so gambled with eden 501 for the few reasons
    1. eventhough it was a 2 ft tank, the volume is quite small (58 x 20 x 30 cm) slightly over 30L
    2. planned to have only creeping fore ground plants so less obstructions to flow
    3. low bio load intended. only shrimps with Boraras Brigittae

now really having serious thoughts of getting a HOF filter.
much simpler setup compared to cannister, no tubings etc. esp for eden 501 when the tubings are smaller sized , fixing up was like playing lego...

does GEX have a bgger HOF filter? or do you think the one which you are using is good enough?
alternatively, maybe get eheim liberty 150 since heard review that the compartment is quite spacious.

anyway i have sort of modified my reactor (stole the idea from a tank in NA ), flowrate is much better now (can see the dent in the substrate underneath).

looking forward to filter shopping this weekend
