Sigh, not only for killies that females are hard to find, among hobbyists too, it's so difficult to find femalesOriginally Posted by lily

The guys here will appreciate if he can control himself, as you can see the culture here is quite different, we reveal our real identities. I would appreciate if he reads the Forum Netiquette and Forum Rules. As you notice we have a quite a number of foreign members, I wish we will be sensitive to them when we use our language, we are not asking for perfect English. It’s ok to make spelling and grammatical mistakes as long as they understand. If we continue to write our language, in no time they leave the forum. I am hoping for more experience breeders outside Singapore to join us in the discussion.Originally Posted by sard

As this forum doesn’t have any commercial interests, I believe Loh is not looking at the number of posts per day rather he is looking at the number of quality post per day. (am I right, Loh?) I know this post might sound/look offensive, but please look at it objectively.

I find myself to be in a quandary sometimes. On the one hand, I want this forum to have many members but on the other, I know when membership becomes too high, we will have all sorts of nonsensical posts. It's hard to define what's a quality post but broadly speaking, I would say it's a post that adds value to the discussion.
Many internet users in Singapore subscribe to public forums and they have got used to the fact that it's perfectly alright to treat forums like they are their own private message boards. In other forums, it's usual to see posts like "you got pm" or "meet you in so-and-so MRT station". Singaporeans don't realise that posts that are of interest to only one person should never be sent to a forum as it can be very irritating to other forum users.
I would very much prefer that all subscribers append their real names at the end of their messages but in Singapore, forum culture is such that people would rather remain anonymous behind nicknames. I don't have the right to tell people off when they don't want to reveal their true identities but by the same token, you can't blame me if I choose to ignore anonymous posts. This syndrome of "posting anonymously" has gone to such a stage where people don't even put down their names when they send private emails. I don't understand why people don't realise that it's very very rude to do this. I get so many such private emails that I have made it a policy to ignore them. I send them all straight to the trash bin.
I don't want to run this forum like a dictatorship. I would just try and educate those who come here that this forum is different from the other forums they are used to. Other forums have commercial interests so they will never tell you that you shouldn't do this or that. But here, I will tell you when you use too much Singlish or treat this forum like it's your own private message board. If I fail in my quest to make this forum different from the others in Singapore, I will close it down. This is not a threat but rather, I really don't want to waste my time and money hosting a forum where people don't give a damn.
I hope you all can see the big picture. Forums are without borders and people from all over the world can come in and read your posts. I don't want them to think that this forum is for Singaporeans only. It would be such a pity and a waste of resources if we don't use this forum to learn something from hobbyists living in other countries. When the membership here hits 100, I will actively invite killifish breeders from other countries to sign up. Now, there's still too few of us to ask the experts to come in.
Peace to all. I hope what I said won't discourage you from posting. Post all you want but please bear in mind that whatever you say should be of interest to at least a few other forum users and not just one.

Well said, Kwek Leong.
I do not know how you guys feel but I just found more reasons to be proud of being acquaintance to this place. I like the differences in how this place is ran which I missed alot in all other forums I had been.
I hope you guys share this same light or otherwise kindly enlighten.
Thanks.
This is a place where there's order, no arrowing around.
Nice forum
Anyway, when "O"s shop is done, please inform, i'll be there! (if have tests then never mind)

I have always been glad and proud to be a member of this forum. From day one, I know this forum will be different as it is a without commercial interests (of course the Owner and moderators make the difference). I hope this forum stay this way as long as possible. To fulfill this, I will be selling (in 1~2 months time) some of my fish/eggs to finance part of the web hosting fee. I know the fund will not be sufficient, it is a gesture of appreciation for what Loh has done for us. J I have always wanted to contribute to the societies/clubs/groups that I join, Loh I hope you will accept my offer.
Regards,
Sia Meng,
I'm touched and I appreciate the offer very much but for the present moment, the webhosting fees are still within my capabilities. I would suggest you keep the money to bring in more killie eggs.
To let those who may be doubtful know that this website is really free from commercial interests, I will disclose how much I have to pay annually. My server charges US $15 a month for 50 MB of space. I was given a discount of 2 months' fees which would mean I pay a total amount of US $150 a year, about equivalent to Sing $265.
I remember reading on another forum, a question where someone asked how much were the webhosting fees of that particular forum but I never saw the answer. The owner replied but he did not answer the question publicly on the forum. He did it through private message. I suppose he wants to keep the amount confidential because once its revealed, the next question that would naturally follow is "who's paying?". It would be embarrassing to many forum owners to reveal who's actually paying the webhosting fees as they claim to be free from commercial interests too.
Well, over here, the owner would suffer no such embarrassment because the answer to that question would be "yours truly"

Jason, welcome back. It's good to hear from you again.
I've been in the fish hobby for a long time and for many years, I was sort of lonely. None of my friends or relatives were into fish or aquatic plants. So I used to go around the fish shops alone and when my fish bred, I couldn't share the joy with others.
The internet changed all that.
The sharing of information, the exchange of aquaria-related stuff, the camaraderie - all these would not have been possible if the internet hadn't come along. Forums such as this one are good places where we can get to know and eventually meet like-minded people. Let's hope O gets his shop ready soon so we can all have our gathering.
Loh K L
Loh,
still no news yet huh?
If I have a dollar & you have a dollar & we swap, neither is better off. BUT if I have an idea & you have an idea & we swap we are both richer
I'm afraid no, Rashid. I knew O is a laid back sort of person but it looks like he's a lot laid back than I thoughtI haven't heard from him since his last visit.
But fret not, there's still a good chance we can have our own meeting place. I talked to another fish shop owner last week and she's agreeable to the idea of letting us use her shop as a meeting place too. But she has to work things out with her partner before the details can be confirmed. I will let you all know as soon as there's news.
Loh K L
Please count me in also. I will try to squeeze out some time to join in the gathering.
Btw my name is Poh San. Just joined the forum a day also. Currently I own a 2ft planted tank while trying to obtail permit from my wife to setup a 4 or 5 ft planted tank.. Just got my first son on April so it is a bit busy now taking care of him. Not yet to start to keep killies but is preparing now.
I live in Buangkok where it is quite near to Rainbow and Petmart. However don't see any killies selling among so many shop there.
I would like to thank Sia Meng and timebomb for their professional advises on setting up a killies tank. Thanks a lot!
