    Hi all,

    For those who are still thinking of rearing killies in your planted tank other than the more common species australe and gardneri. You can try the American Flag Fish. This is also a killies fish and the best thing is, it has the same diet as SAE. Yes this is an algae eating fish. One month back I saw this fish selling at a local fish shop (along Horne road) for $3.00 per fish. I can’t remember if I saw females. The local fish shop owner knew this is a killies fish and recommended me to buy this fish for elimination of algae. Quite nice, the fish has red strips like the American flag, http://www.vascogomes.net/ has a very good picture of the fish. Check it out!!

    Just curious to find out. Anyone here own this fish??

    Hi Sia Meng,
    I was searching for ways to control/eradicate a growing family of algae in my tanks and stumbled upon this site;
    http://www.floridadriftwood.com/alga...ification.html

    It appears that the Florida Flag Fish (Jordanella floridae) consumes quite a few variety of algae and has nice looks to boot. Whereabout is this 'Horne Road LFS' again? (sounds like another shopping spree! :wink: )

    I like the fish's description found at;
    http://www.floridadriftwood.com/product.asp?3=121
    "FFF grow not much bigger than 2"; and are shoaling fish.. They breed VERY easily. Please note, males will defend their eggs from other fish that try to encroach".

    Yup! definitely another candidate for the killie tank.

    The colour is really beautiful and resemble the flag of America. The shop has locate the fish into their display planted tank and I have no idea if they are still some for sale. Will check out during lunch time.

    The fish seem aggressive to each other but leave the other species alone.

    Hi people,

    can rely on the opening time. I think they opened a bit later as at times when I went there even at 1pm it was still closed.

    Anyway, went down today late afternoon and no worry, they still have a tankful of them. They're selling at 2.50 per fish.

    Recently, seems like there are many new fish shops opening around the area where I live. Besides Plantas Aquaticas, the shop where the American Flag Fish is for sale, there's also a new shop not far away called Eco-Culture. The shop is quite big and they have many Dwarf Cichilds for sale. It's on the ground floor of Eminent Plaza just behind the bus stop. Furthur down along Lavender Street is another new fish shop undergoing renovation. Along Race Course Road there are 2 new fish shops, one specialising in marine fish and the other in Discus.

    It's great that so many fish shops are located near to my house but I wonder how they are going to survive. The market is saturated with fish shops and the competition among them is going to be cut-throat.

    As with any other industries, the next best thing is how they can value-add to their service. In this case, the owner who is knowledgeable in his/her field will be able to survive as he can attract customers with his advice.

    That's why a lot people come to KL for advice.

    Ha, I wish I was knowledgeable but the more I learn about killies, the less I understand the fish. I hope I haven't give anyone bad advice. If I did, sorry.

    As my favourite quote says: "We were all beginners once, we are all beginners still".

    Hi Sia Meng and those thinking of getting the flag fish,

    I've been doing some reading and am willing to withdraw the idea of having flag fish as companions to my killies.... but perhaps only for a algae-ridden planted tank.

    It's described as ... "The Jordanella floridae has a reputation of being pugnacious, classing it as a mono species fish".

    Also, "The larger fry do not hesitate to eat their brethren" kinda makes me worry for younger killie frys seeking refuge in a permanent specie setup! The complete article to the quotes can be found here.

    You have been warned!
