Bill,
It may interest you to know that this morning I found 4 fry in the peat you sent. Thank you so much for sending the eggs. 4 fry may not seem like much but I have high hopes that I can raise a whole generation from them.

Yes, that's the fish, ugly one, huh? Thanks for the tips! I'll try toBill, the zimiensis is the fish on the first page of David's website correct? I think it is because the last time I saw a pic of it anywhere was on his ad on Aquabid. Ronnie's pretty curious too.![]()

KL, don't be in a hurry to place them in different quarters without the peat.Originally Posted by timebomb
I, too, had 4 hatch out and after a week the peat was looking poorly so I
changed them to cleaner quarters and to my dismay: lost 2 the first week
after changing and the last 2 three days agoI hope indeed you have
better luck. I got some eggs from Tony Terceira: A. splendopleure Ombe
River 99 wherein 4 out of 6 eggs hatched and am still keeping the line after 4 generations. I've since gotten some new males to inject new blood in the line. BTW, what are you feeding them?
Luck!

I'm not feeding them anything for the time being. I believe many fry are lost when we transfer them because there's no food in the new quarters. I transferred my 4 fry into a plastic container that has been lying around for months with some plants inside. In this instance, the plant is Monoselenium tenerum, formerly known as Pellia. I'm quite sure there's enough infusoria inside the container to keep the fry well-fed for the first week or so.
When they are larger, I will feed them with baby brine shrimps.

KL,
I had some factors that you won't be faced with: we had a cold snap that was detrimental due to our main gas heater turning on and off because of a faulty thermostat. We are talking 20F with winds at night and using 2 incandescent lights to shine on their container I fear was not up to task. When I moved the fish to cleaner quarters I used java moss from a container that I had also inoculated with a paramecium culture about 4 weeks ago. I am thinking of using dry resting rotifer cysts in the future that hatch out in 24 hours to 3 days, depending on temperature for an impromptu (almost) feast for newly hatched fry. www.aquaculture.com has these for sale along with dry plankton feed that can be mixed with water to feed them. Anyone over there use dry rotifer resting cysts? Curious. What's the price of brine shrimp eggs in Singapore?
Bill Ruyle
Sorry, wrong site, it is www.aquaculturestore.com for dry rotifer resting cysts.

Bill, I've never heard of dry resting rotifer cysts but I've heard of people feeding rotifers to young fry and even then, it was from my marine hobbyist friends. In any case it would be a great addition to the diet of young fry apart from the usual BBS and daphnia for young fry.
Regarding your issue with a fault heating system, I think you can try those egg incubators that some companies sell for incubating reptile and bird eggs. I've heard of some people using incubators on a mailing list once, not sure which list it was though but they reported some degree of success with this method. Perhaps an incubator could be your answer to the heating problem.
Price of brine shrimp eggs in Singapore can range from $5 for a small plastic vial of eggs (not very air-tight though) to $12 for JBL NovoTemia eggs. I seldom see cans for sale though. Most of them here order BBS eggs from overseas sources.
P.S. The zimiensis ain't ugly

I hope it is a "food grade" plastic container. In the US we've encountered
deformities because of plasticizers in certain "rubbermaid" type containers.
I had rainwater and peat stored in such that I used for hatchwater only to
discover a predominance in bent spines (Ep sexfasciatus rathkei-- I posted on killietalk about it and others came forward
with like circumstances and conditions. After brainstorming for awhile the
experts on the list came up with plasticizers as the culprit. Plasticizers had
leached into the stored rainwater and peat (stored 3-4 months).

Hi Bill,
There are companies here importing BS eggs in bulk from USA. These are normally ordered for farms in Indonesia and Malaysia. The companies will usually not keep stocks as the BS eggs are never meant for local market. However if you call and asked them to keep few cans for you, they are most willing to help. 2~3 weeks ago a couple of us here bought about 7 cans at about SDG$45.00 each. The retail price for a can in Singapore is about SDG$80.00.
I hope this helps.
regards
