    Hi, everyone,

Bill Ruyle wrote me and said he managed to persuade Wright Huntley to join this forum. Hurray!!!!!

Actually, I've been hoping Wright would join since the day I started this message board but I was too shy to ask . Wright is well-known to be an authority on many things related to the hobby - Killies, Tropical Fish and Aquatic Plants etc. We are all honoured by his presence.

Just in case you didn't know, the method of using a long-neck bottle to harvest vinegar eels was invented by Wright. That's the reason I called it the "Wright way" on my web site.

Together with David Mikkelsen who joined last week and Tony Terceira who has been here for a while, we now have 3 very well-known Killifish personalities in this forum. I would say this is another milestone for me.

Woah... now this is really something!

Wright, if you're tuned in, a warm welcome from us all and I hope you'd share with us your invaluable insights, as did Tony and David. Since most of us are still relative newbies, please do bear with our 'well-trodden' questions.

Kwek Leong, to me, this is more than a milestone... it's more like 'a giant leap for mankind!"... at least for killie nuts in SG!

Bill, thanks for getting the 'geezer'* to hop on board!

... now back to Wright

*... by the most complimentary definition... a wise man!

    Wright Huntley

Well, *nobody* makes Wright do anything he doesn't want to do, but I'm
extremely happy he has joined! I'm but a grain of sand, folks, but he's the
full large hourglass on a wide range of topics! He was one of the first to
help me in the killie hobby when I joined AKA, got a bunch of us to buy
the TDS meters when Hanna Instruments had them on sale for 14.95USD,
tirelessly answered my questions on water chemistry, and a pretty darn
good photographer in any format you care to mention!

    Welcome aboard, Wright!

Warm Welcome and cooling tanks in the tropics

    Hi Folks,

Thanks for the kind greetings. I hope I can be of some value, here, as helping newer hobbyists is a most rewarding way to repay the help I received when I was starting out.

OTOH, I hope to learn from you some of the problems facing those in warm, humid climates that I have never had to cope with. I lived in Puerto Rico for a bit over a year, but wasn't keeping fish then. I admit I was fascinated by the neighbor's outdoor concrete ponds containing Gouramis and Paradise Fish (as I recall).

It was about 50 years ago, and my memory seems to improve little with age. :-) I did get actively involved about a year later, so the experience may have triggered something.

Bill R. asked me if the deBruyn filters would keep the tanks cooler. I responded that they won't do much to the temperature in humid conditions, but the extra oxygen may overcome some of the stress involved in a too-warm tank.

Has anyone played with Peltier coolers as a way to chill a small to medium-sized tank?

Enough for now from , from the high desert of inland Calif.

... as does with fine vintage wines

Wright, great to have you here! With your wide and varied scope of experience, there's much we can learn from you.

Reading through posts from you and the other gurus at KT, is one of my highlights for the day. Myself with little to offer, would lurk and skim off the juicy parts, and serve it to the folks here. In one way or another, it has enhanced the local killie-keeping experience.

Yes, I'm also one of those who're looking into the Henri filters. Have some bits and pieces stuck in my head but never organised enough to understand how it works.

Regardless of how it turns out, I'm optimistic that the small tanks will benefit from a long-term functioning wet/dry system, even if doesn't cool the water.

I have contemplated about those peltier devices, ie. if you're referring to CPU peltier coolers, but personally... water and voltage can be a nasty mix. Being E&E handicapped, I have no idea how to rig one up or control the temperature. Have you gone down that path?... not that you needed to!

Ronnie, the tape still hasn't arrived but bear with me, it should arrive soon.
Wright's idea about cpu coolers might be something worth checking out for
5-10 gallon tanks (one clever guy!) Wright has also made some of these
de Bruyn filters and has posted a tank (plastic file box) that allows for a
built-in de Bruyn filter--about 4 gallons in size to be made quite easily. I
think they are made by Sterilite, not sure since I threw all the stickers away on them. Also, here's a little rundown on Wright's schedule: he hikes
3 miles Tuesdays and Fridays in some gorgeous Sierra foothills country
and works as the answer man at a computer outlet on Saturdays, so those
days are going to be busy times for him to answer posts. Wright is a heck
of a nice guy and will answer posts to him, (he's always answered my questions, as stupid as some of them are )but if it takes awhile it's because the man is busy.
Hoping you have a great weekend,

    Bill
