Kwek Leong, I've been wondering if you'd considered off-site uploading (or hotlinking your pics from another site).

Each of our priorities differ but to cover articles for my 3 hobbies, each has it's own account with Angelfire at 20Mb per account. Pop-ups comes with each web-page loaded, but not with image extracted/downloaded. The possible catch, of course, the limited bandwidth allocated to each account.

With jpeg compression, a 400pixel image goes between 15~20Kb... stretching the free 20Mb a long way.

Things are fine and dandy if the hosting contract isn't due but I think fellow members will understand and expect some downtime during the transition/migration to another server... that is as inevitable as death and taxes

With hosting prices like these, there really isn't a need to over compress pictures. The only consideration would be for those that are still on dial-up, not only here in Singapore but also in other countries.

If you migrate your pictures off to another site, you can maintain the forum as it is. That at least would give you the time to get the forum properly moved over to the new home.

Ronnie, I'm aware of sites like Angelfire which gives out web space for free but I have reservations using them. I don't know if you are aware of this but when you upload pictures using free web space, the company that provides this service has rights to your pictures. In other words, they can use your pictures any way they like and they don't have to ask you for permission. The other thing about "hotlinking" is when the server is down, you can't complain as the service is free.

But the thing about "hotlinking" that bugs me most is why should I hotlink when web space can be so cheap.

timebomb, don't hotlink to free sites, hotlink to your own "other" sites.

Teck Song, thanks for the offer. If the guy who is helping me migrate this forum runs into problems, I will ask him to contact you. I checked ipowerweb and their prices seem reasonable. Seems like they also do data transfers for free. Since you have already vouched for their services, I will consider using them.

I've been told that unlimited web space and unlimited bandwidth are marketing gimmicks and they are just not possible. But ipowerweb offers 800 MB for USD7.95 a month. 800 MB is 8 times what I'm getting for half the money.

    Hi there,

I've done a bit of work running business/mission critical websites for various people and it was my side line..

So far, the most reliable hosting company I have found with a reasonable price is www.cihost.com (CIHost). CIHost has been around a long time and they have a huge Internet backbone and have many Internet pipes to (re)route traffic.

I find companies that are "too" cheap are able to fulfill their promises (or service level agreement - SLA). Make sure what sort of SLA they offer you!

Incidentally, CIHost has got crazy deals on offer most of the times, take a look:

    http://www.cihost.com/cheap_web_hosting/

Some of the deals are for dedicated servers with unlimited transfer but storage/disk space is often limited.

BTW, just in case you are suspicious, I do not work for CIHost nor am I affliated with them. Just sharing good hosting companies that I have direct experience with.

And if you need help on migrating web sites, I'll be happy to help.

    Cheers,

    Roger Thien

It's good to hear from you again, Roger. Thanks for your offer to help migrate the site. The guy who's helping me is working on this now. We have not decided on a web host yet but we will consider the one you recommended. Thank you.

    Kwek Leong,

I've been lurking mostly in the "Planted Tank" sections of this board. I'm just learning more and more about moss just like everyone. I'm really envious of your collection of moss. But then again, you deserve to have them and the ability to grow them well.

I got to know about this thread because a buddy of mine told me about it. He apparently met up with you and he came to know about some technical issues you are facing with this hosting company. You've also told him about the migration woes you had with your MySQL database. I've since shared with him how I migrate MySQL databases for my customers and he has done a test and found out how simple it can be using the approach that I employ!

I've done all sorts of things before to migrate sites and I thought that I can offer some free help. Since I've gotten a lot of good and free information for my love of mosses here.

I guess it's my time to shine to help those with something that I am really good in ie. the Internet and hosting/migration of web-sites. Like many, we do not want this site to go away. So, let me know if I can help in anyway in this effort!

    Cheers,

    Roger Thien

Thank you very much for your kind words, Roger. You don't know how good it makes me feel to read them.

I didn't know he and you are friends. He's helping me with the migration now and we are going to work out a schedule soon. It would be great if you can help him iron out the problems. I can't help much with the technical details as I'm basically a dummy with computers.
