Hi, fellas,
Together with Ronnie and one forum user whose name I would keep confidential for the time being, we are planning on making a big move. My package with the present web host ends in August this year and we will have to migrate this web site and forum to another one where hopefully, the charges will be lower.
Someone sent me an email this morning and recommended this hosting company. I took a brief look and it looks too good to be true. How much is 5 GB compared to the 100 MB that I'm paying for now? Is it 50 times more or 500? I'm confused with things like megabytes and gigabytes.

looks good Kwek Leong. The price is about right and since you don't have much multimedia content (must check contract whether they allow hosting of video and audio materials) the 20GB transfer limit ought to be enough.
If it is good I might move dear old hexazona over too
one thing to check, phpBB seems to be available in Silver only.

Thanks for confirming the size, Joshua. At 50 times bigger, we can all go to town with our picturesOriginally Posted by Joshua
Thanks for pointing that out, Choy. But honestly, with that sort of prices, I think we should go for the Gold Hosting plan which offers one year of service for free. In other words, we pay USD 16.95 a month for a 2 year plan and get 3 years of web hosting. It would work out to only USD11.30 a month. And we will get 20 GB of web space and 60 GB of bandwidth.Originally Posted by hwchoy

HI, pls take note!!
You cannot get the bronze if you are using Database(MYSQL 3.23) for your forum.

This is so far the cheapest per MB webhosting services i have come across. It really depend on what you want to do with killies.com. If you signup for 2GB of space USD11.30 per month or USD135.6 per year , you have to make sure you utilized the GB space to make it worth while.
Some webhosting such as rcthost.com providing 750MB hosting for USD 89.99 per year. ipowerweb.com providing 800MB for USD 7.95 monthly or 95USD per year can be take into consideration also.
If you are using lesser than a GB, it would definately be cheaper to go for the alternatives above.
Reliabilty is to be take in consideration also. Check for existing website hosted with the hosting company to see if the speed is ok. Generally running PHPBB2 should be fine.
For your ref, i've two website running in different hosting company

Hey, folks,
If you think that was cheap, look what Lily found.

Err... this is unsolicited but would the "dictator" (aka Timebomb  ) be interested in gathering donations to offset the hosting fees?
I remember talking about subscription fees earlier on but nothing came out of it. Still, I would like to contribute, at least in part, to a community where I truly learnt a lot from. So no subscriptions, maybe donations?
Cheers

But from what we've seen so far, web hosting costs can be really cheap. The last one that Lily Choo recommended offers unlimited web space and 40 GB of bandwidth for only USD7.50 a month. At that sort of prices, I can easily continue to be "dictator".
But seriously, if the costs add up to only about Sing $160 a year for unlimited web space, I would feel there's no justification to call for donations. I would feel guilty using your money as there are many other more worthwhile causes to donate to.

Wow, that's very attractive... Choy what are we waiting for!

Hmmm...I'm repeating what subzero has mentioned, how's the transfer speed like? If there are a lot of members logging, can the host maintained the transfer speed?

Ben, you're the hexazona web dictator, as long as it can host multimediaOriginally Posted by subzero

Zul, I'm not sure if transfer speed is the same as bandwidth but this forum is getting only 783.66 MB of bandwidth. The site that Lily found promises 40 GB of bandwidth for a lower price.Originally Posted by zmzfam

I've always thought the internet is without borders. Why can't they host a forum from another country? Doesn't make sense to me at all

Maybe it was really too good to be true after all. Take a look at this.

In additional to cost, you should also check the stability of the site and the bandwidth they have to Internet. Your site will be very slow if they have only a small pipe shared by many sites.
In the end, there is no free lunch. You get what you pay for.
I would not go for sites which offer very low price. Suggest picking one in the mid range and with proven track record.
I am also looking for a provider to host my butterfly group website..
Gan

transfer speed is the instantaneous speed you can get, whereas the 40GB they promise is the total transfer amount. This is like your circuit breaker rating (15A) versus what you will pay (kWh).Originally Posted by timebomb

Selecting a good Webhosting is a big headache when this site is running so smoothly. Hope Mr Loh are not feeling too stress out now.
1. Package Cost !
Bigger storage and Cheaper cost? what option the offer?
Any Database? All this we can check on the package offer and know if it suite our requirement.
2. Service Level !
This is most difficult.
What if the new Hosting does not provide a good uptime. Meaning that we have a hard time trying to access it. And have to inform the owner and the frustration.
I myself has use ipowerweb.com for 2 yr before i end my webhosting due to work commitment. Their services are not bad and i have about 95% uptime. And email them the problem(site not accessable) they will solve it in 1hr time).
And to migrate this website over to another hosting, have to consider the migration phase. Since the data and web are growing since day one.

I've checked all the web hosting companies that you all recommended and I have to say I'm confused as to which one I should select. It's hard to decide because I just don't know how good are their services. One thing I've realised though, the company that is hosting this forum now gave me a rotten deal. Although they gave me a 50% discount, their charges are still many times higher than all I've seen so far. I pay Sing $300 a year for 100 MB of space with 7500 MB of bandwidth.
I'm coming close to my limit of 100 MB of web space. Without pictures, the forum would be a dull place but everytime I upload one, I have to think twiceI anticipate there will be many hiccups when we migrate but I have no choice. We have to move before the August deadline or I won't be able to upload any more pictures.
