    Hi all

Anyone here have much experiance with F. theirryi? I need to know about gender ratios. Do they tend to favour males or females? I think the water they are in is moderately hard (flowing from the marble quarries of Tuscany...).

    Thanks

Hi Tyrone, I've never personally kept Fundulosoma thierryi, but I believe a good resource of information would be this page on Tim Addis's site.

    Fundulosoma thierryi

In the last killie-themed issue from TFH, there was an article by a THI breeder who mentioned that these were called Nothobranchius thierryi instead. I shan't bother with all this taxonomic confusion but as always, if all else fails, get back to the person whom you got the eggs from. The source is always a good person to speak to when it comes to tips and tricks on raising a species to maturity.

    Hi Tyrone
This is one of my favorites, and I have bred them for 1 1/2 year, and my wather has been ph 7.3 and Kh about 4. ppm about 200.

I think the average have been 60% male.
I haven't had any known strain, but now I have got one, so I'm gonna change the fish.

thanks for the info... I think I will just sell my excess fish a some senselessly low price per half a dozen unsexed fish this weekend. If that fails then I will feed all the excess males I can see to the N. orthonotus...

I'm still keeping the Fundulosoma thierryi where a got it from a fellow hobbyist in Korea. When I started, I only had a pair from a bag of eggs. I can't seem to get the fry to survive as they die immediately after hatching out. Recently, I've acquired some new blood and hope to strengthen the gene pool.

For me, I usually have more females than males. I can't comment on the sex ratio percentage as I only have a small group of fry.

    Ditto.

    Well... in my humble experience,
    m:f = about 5:5 in summer (25~29Celcius), and 7:3 in the winter (18~21Celcius)
Other water parameters were same... somehow. :P

Folks, I just got 50 eggs in the mail from a fella in Moscow, Russia and
already have 3 babies! They are the GH 94/1 population from what I
could tell in the photo on Aquabid. Anyone ever keep the Mali population?

    Hi Bill,

I just got the Fundulosoma thierryi Gh 1/94 "Accra Plains" eggs from Germany. They're still clear.

Just for general information purposes, the GH 94/1 code is attributed to the location called "Ghana" as stated on Tim Addis's site and page on F. thierryi. There's one population called "Accra" and the nearest location with a reference to Accra Plain is Milestone 56. Refer to the site for more information.

Bill, according to Tim's site, the Mali population was somewhat prone to velvet. I've not seen this population available for sale. It is a beautiful strain in its own right.

    Hi Svein and Jian Yang,
I'm going to ask Konstantin if I can post his pic of the eggs I got, that is,
the fish I hope they will eventually be.

The Mali I think is the prettiest of the lot, but I've never seen them
available, and I've been looking for 2 years Of course adding salt would
combat their susceptibility to velvet, as stated on Tim's site.

    Updates?

    Mr Au,

    any updates?

    Here's mine.

Sorry to say that my bag of over 60+ eggs easily gave me more than 30-40 fries but I've only got 6 young fishes left, and 5 of them females.

Here's the only male. It looks a little deformed to me, or it could just be too skinny. It attempted suicide, jumping from the table to the floor when I tried taking a photo of it. Hope it will survive.

Several of my fish have the same curved back deformaty... I'm going to try and breed it out of the fish but that will take a long while...

    Nice male though!

Don't forget to rewet the peat.

    Hi Yi Hong,

I've lost all the fishes when I was away for my Thailand trip last December. But I've collected some eggs from them. It should be ready to hatch in a few weeks' time. So by April, I should have eggs to send to those Whom I promised. So please bare with it for a while.

    Here's mine.

When newly hatched, I realise the fry are simple too small to take BBS so I'll use paramecium cultures to feed the fry for the first week. I usually have more than 90% survival rate.

It seems like malnutrition to me rather than deform. Do not underestimate them. They may look small but eat alot. Try to feed them twice a day and they'll spawn at very young age.

Brought this thread back from the dead. I took home a trio of thierryi from Ronnie recently. Very nice little fish and very horny too.

I found eggs floating in their plastic bag when I was taking them out and transferring to their new tank.

do you have a locality and collection code for this? does it differ from Au's?
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

    Choy,
The thierryi were under my care and did managed to raise a decent number of 2nd generation juvenile. Population of original breeders dwindled till there were none. What Jian Yang collected from me, were the older juvs but are breeding already.

FWIW, mine is the uncoded line from Au and should be the same as what Yi Hong posted earlier in the thread.
I'm back & keeping 'em fingers wet,
    Ronnie Lee
