As the topic suggests this is a discussion, or better still a talk on this particular work by Col. Scheel. Was discussing about a Moss ID in the Planted Tank subforum but its better to split it off and discuss it here.
    ________

I have not seen or read this publication and would appreciate it if someone could glean more information on this subject or better still, a place where I can get a copy of it.

That said, I have a feeling it's out of print. It seems to be a rather good book/paper/magazine to refer to, albeit an old version that may or not be obsolete in the face of current taxonomic upheavals involving killies.

Apart from that, I have seen and read the codes on Richard Sexton's International Killifish Association website. From what I understand, several of the 3-letter abbreviations are no longer in use due to the invalidity rendered to some species names that have been synonymised with current valid species. Again, as Wright has mentioned earlier in the Moss ID thread, the codes are now being used in many different ways to define some species, and in doing so are in danger of causing a lot of confusion when codes are mismatched to the species in question.

Again, I have taken the liberty to use codes of my own making and roughly based on Scheel's work (as listed on the IKA site) in creating the census for killifish species in Singapore. (For use within Singapore only)

Though I'm not sure if I'm up to the task (I hope I am.. ), I intend to create an alternative list, based partly on Scheel's work, to be used as a more defining list when it comes to usage of the 3-letter, or 4-letter codes (as used for subspecies) to end the current confusion that's going around in the world. With new species being described on a frequent basis, I believe its time to do a major overhaul of Scheel's system.

The question is, should I do this? And if I do, should I submit this work to say, Killie-Data?

    Comments/Suggestions are welcome.

    Jianyang,

Thanks for moving this to where it belongs.

Col. Scheel's Rivulins of the Old World TFH 1975 (aka ROTOW) is still surprisingly valid and useful, today. It has detailed descriptions of the characteristics and breeding conditions for almost all the African killifish known in his day (and the number may surprise you).

It also is a rich source of information on hybridization and chromosmal analysis that were his special fortes. It is a much better and more accurate book than his better known Atlas.... The latter was screwed up by TFH editors and has many inaccurate captions, etc. The Atlas was published posthumously, so he never got to edit the final layout. It is only an impressive coffee-table book to impress your non-fish-literate friends.

Do find a copy of ROTOW (Amazon used books?) and use his list, not my friend Richard's inaccurate one at IKA as your starting point. More folks have been influenced by the abreviations used by Scheel, so you will find the letters he used are most universally accepted.

Should you do it? My answer is "Why not?" It is a *lot* of work, and the only useful function is, like net shortcuts and slang, a way to create "shorthand" for our informal communications. [BTW, I like Scheel's habit of making alphabetical lists by species name, only, ignoring genus.]

There certainly are common species names across genera. Like our ways to spell 2 in English (two, too, to) the few cases are easy to spot by context, 90% of the time.

The task, as I see it is to get two things updated. New world killifish were never in Scheel's original list, so they need to be added. Old world fishes have added many new species, so they need to be added, too. I would hesitate to remove any old TLAs (Three Letter Abreviations) as to do so would invite new duplications that are anathema to rational search processes.

Initially publishing them here, in killietalk, the BKA list and DKG/KFN/SKS/ etc. equivalents will get a lot of feedback for corrections or clarification. Then submission to atlases like KMI and KilliData would be useful, if they want folks to all be on the same page with their shorthand.

Just my US$0.001 (2 cents, adjusted for rapid US$ devaluation)

At 7 hours, still no bids. The seller has pegged the starting price way too high, I think. The regular used-book services should get it for much less than US$40! Try them first.

I got mine from Lee Finley for about 25 bucks (brand spanking new). It was his last one though... Contact the seller and tell him you'll give him $20 and see what he says...

If ROTOW was printed today it would cost much more than 40 USD.
The exchange of USD is at the moment quite favorably.
If the guy wants 40 USD and you suggest 20 USD he might get offended.
If one really want this book this might anyhow be "The opportunity".
I have one copy myself - and it is NOT for sale...

A good place to locate a copy of ROTOW would be:

    http://www.alibris.com/home.cfm

Run a search for Jorgen Scheel and you will get a list of what is currently available.
