There must be an echo in here.
I feel the same way Tyrone and Jianyang do. There are few good substitutes for live newly-hatched (not day-old) bbs.
Their motion attracts the "snapping instinct" of the babies, and they are rich in HUFAs that promote early growth and health.
Only the finer quality frozen Brine Shrimp and nauplii have been cryofrozen to prevent tissue breakdown, but many of those have partially thawed and been refrozen at the LFS, so are ruined. [Look for perfectly flat, undistorted packages from SF Bay Brand o/e.]
Once the babies have learned the taste and color, you can gradually shift some species to dehydrated decapsulated eggs, that are even more nutritious than the bbs. Not all, but most, will take them after being trained on the live product.
Vinegar eels for surface feeders, and microworms or Walter worms for bottom feeders can help in an emegency, but they are not nearly as effective as bbs, IMHO.
I always supplement the bbs with infusoria, per Tyrone's suggestion. Java moss with a drop of Liquifry #1 will cause a bloom and keep any smaller babies from losing out if they have trouble swallowing the Artemia for the first few days. I'm not certain, but I think I have tended to avoid producing "runts" by doing this.
Really tiny babies get OSI's Artificial Plankton Rotifer (APR) and "green water" as first food. APR is a micro-encapsulated egg and fish product that has worked well for me.
