Hi there, the thing about fishes are, the more hiding places given, the less they hid. I find it quite true. have fun! welcome..
for feeding, always feed the same time every day, and drop food at the same spot.
dont worry![]()
Recently just bought 3 of these. Was told by the LFS owner that they are Holland Rams. Put them in the same tank with the neons.
Has been 2 days and the rams have been in hiding behind the plants. Once in a while, one of them will come out but if you go near the tank, it rushed into hiding again.
They also do not come out for feeding. Have been without food for days already. How to make them come out for food?

No worries, once they are real hungry they will come out for food, I did kept Holland ram before and that is the behaviour of this fish. Try not to move too fast infront of them and they will swim to you and stare at you until you frighten them off again.
Ha ha enjoy this fish and just to let you know they will spawn too.....

The more hiding places given, the less they hide? Hmm, this is interesting. I see them nipping at the bottom of the tank. But unlikely there is food cos most time, the neons would finish them off when the pellets were still floating.
So it is ok they go without food for days? 4 days now with no food. Will they swim up like the neons to snatch for food? Or are they so timid that they will wait patiently for the food pellets to fall. Chances are very slim cos the neons will give very little chance for it to happen.
My previous experience with them is that they will swim up to get their food as well, they will learn too... so no worry, sometime what I'll do is when I sprinkle food on the water surface stir abit of the water surface to get the food sink. This way they are able to get food as well.

My rams still don't swim up. 2 gone already. Left one. Seperate the ram into another tank. Feed with pellets that can sink down. Still refuse to eat. WHY?![]()

Do check out your water condition. 1 interesting fact about rams is that they will either die a few days after you bought them or they will be the toughest in the tank. They are very sensitive to water condition, once it is used to the water condition they thrive. I have even tried to keep them at sump tank before.
Love all,Trust few,Do wrong to none
Now i seperate the Ram into a smaller container so that I can change the water more regularly with dechlorinated water. Hopefully he learns how to eat. Sigh.
Agree with mictok. They are sensitive to change in water condition. They are sensitive species. Is your setup new ? They do better in older setup because water is softer and more acidic for obvious reason.

I bought some worms today. Finally it ate. So pampered, this fish. Dont eat dried food.

They can be tuned. No worry. Always feed the same time every day, and drop food at the same spot. Once they are more steady (zai) they will take any food

Worms all died yesterday.
No choice have to go back to dried food.
Again, the bad habit is here. It can see the pellets fall in front of its eyes and yet not want to eat the food.
I think this fish only eat live food. Saw it chasing after an ant crawling outside the tank.
When will this fish become more zai and not so choosy with its food? Sigh.

Try to change other brands of food. If not, there is always frozen bloodworms that cost less then a dollar for a pack of 24 cubes. 24? i think its 24, or was it 20?...![]()

Now swimming: Plecos and Apistogrammas
Add more hiding places for them. They will like it and be 'zai' soon![]()

Has anyone successfully coax a Ram to eat pellets? How did you do it?
The Ram can put the sinking pellets in its mouth and then phew it all out.
If your fish are accustomed to live or frozen food, it is difficult to make them eat dried food no matter how you try.

Yes, especially if they dislike dry food. It's not easy to make them think of those types of sinking pellet as food, unless you have other dither fish in the tank like tetras, that will feed like crazy on them. The Rams tend to "learn" from watching the other fish.
For live foods other than brine shrimp and tubifex worms (not recommended), you can try daphnia. Frozen foods, stick with bloodworm and Mysis, since some other guys have had no problems getting their fish to eat the Mysis.
Other people have no problem in getting their fish to eat NLS pellets. Perhaps you can give those a try if you don't mind.

Hey,
Just to share my experience with my ram.
I feed him with Tetra Pro Colour and he seems to eat them just fine. But i guess it might be true that they learn from other fishes though mine started eating the next day after introduced into the tank. probably learned from my cardinals as the previous bro mentioned. though he does wait for the food to sink before eating them
