Presenting one of my young male Simp. chacoensis San Juán PAR 94/36. I only had 3 fry that hatched from a batch of eggs sent by a Japanese breeder along with some Simp. ocellatus Itaobim BR-367 eggs.

Out of those 3 fry I have at least 2 males and hopefully the smallest and probably the runty one turns out to be female.. I hope. If that does not turn out the way I want it to be, then I guess this species will be joining the "extinct" list on the census soon.

Again my apologies for the picture quality. They're housed in a small plastic tank with a pretty badly scratched inner surface. Focusing on the fella was pretty difficult as it will scoot away if I turned on the strip lighting on my rack.

The little guy in the first post has grown quite a bit. Here's the latest image of him.

He really reminds me of Austrolebias nigripinnis.

Currently at 4cm from head to tip of tail and still growing. The colours are a little faded because they just had a water change. Very skittish fellas. Their dark black body colour returns once the lights are faded or shut off. When I switch on the lights, they'll run all over the tank.

The smallest one among the 3 is starting to show signs of being a female. I'm beginning to see a small faded black spot appearing on the middle of the body and smaller faded spots appearing. If all goes well, it will turn out to be a viable female and there is hope for this species.

He is developing very nicely! I hope the smallest one is indeed a female!

    Good luck!

Very nice fish. Hopefully, you can keep this population going.

Deborah, it looks like one. I'm beginning to see the mottling pattern that appears in females of this species.

Edwin, thanks, I'll do my best. I will be moving them to a larger tank vacated by the death of my last hellneri. Hopefully in bigger quarters, the female will grow a little bigger.

Edwin, glad to share the images anytime. You took time to photograph your nothos anyway.

And yes, you should get some Simpsonichthys eggs soon.

After several weeks of waiting.. I finally have a female out of the 3 fry. Apparently the smallest turned out to be the female.
