Using KNO3 is the best way to boost your nitrates... if you need a bit to try I can pass some to you.
As for your "green brush algae"; I could be wrong, but it looks a bit like the onset of Chlorella vyulgaris... which is a "desirable algae"; for some aquarist.... But I've not had experience with your green brush algae or Chlorella vyulgaris so I can't be sure.
Also from the pic, you can also see bba mingled into your "gba".... just thought I'd point it out.

I too notice that the BBA is starting to overwhelm everything, including the 'GBA'.
As for Chlorella vygularis, I don't know much about this except for a small picture in the Oriental plant book. Seems like my "Green Brush Algae" can also stick on plants. Can't be a desirable thing right?
Also, would it be possible for me to collect some KNO3 from you to try this weekend?
I have decided against using Simazine after reading exactly what it does, which is basically KILL ALL AQUATIC PLANT LIFE (and some livestocks too).
Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

benny. I have kno3, you can collect or I can go over tonight after my gym.
Hey Benny, I was having major problems with BBA also for the last few weeks. It started after one of my bigger SAE's died and it wasn't discovered for a while. By the time I found out, it was half decomposing.
Anyway, the BBA was pretty bad, mainly on the tenellus and e.bleheri. Water conditions were similar to yours,
NO2 : 0 ppm
NO3 : 0 pmm
NH3/NH4 : 0 ppm
PO4 very low, about 0.1ppm. I dose Flourish, E15 (couple of tablets a week) and K2SO4 for 20ppm K.
KH 4, PH 6.5-6.8. Water changes about 30%-40% weekly, but even when I removed all affected leaves, BBA would come back in force. The bioload is average I think, about 80 small fish in 80 gallons
Then, I decided to wash my filter, and ever since, I've had much less BBA, same fert regime, same water changes, I have started adding a little SERA black water extract after water changes though.
BTW, I was really surprised to find 2 yamato shrimps living happily in my 2028!
My feeling is that the N deficiency was the problem. With a filter wash, there's probably some NH4/3 or NO2 for the plants to get their N
and beat the BBA to the other nutrients since plants generally prefer to get N from ammonia vs NO3 rite? The plants are currently doing quite well.
I'm planning to get some KNO3 from Dr. Mallick's, just haven't had time to go down. Just remembered I was supposed to share some of my K2SO4 with you, so sorry, I've been really swamped at work and of course the new addition to the family....[]
