    Hi all,

My family member will be going to Singapore next weekend. I hope I will be able to join them. Appreciate if anyone can tell me which LFS should I ask my family to go to help me get some mosses. Those harder to get mosses the better. I normally went to NA and the shop besides it. The latter has really alot of varieties. 1 stop shop. Anymore of such lfs?

    Thanks & regards,
    JS Tan

    JS,

Here are the names and addresses of a few fish shops in Singapore that specialise in mosses.

    Mermaid World
Block 443 Ang Mo Kio Ave 10
    #01-1233
    Singapore 560443
    Tel: 97939733

    Bioplast
    Block 22 Boon Keng Road
    #01-23
    Singapore 330022
    Tel: 62964916

    Generation X Aquarium
    Block 81 Marine Parade Central
    #01-634
    Singapore 440081
    Tel: 63459057

Fish shops in Singapore that sell aquatic plants usually have one or 2 species of mosses for sale but the 3 shops named above have more than usual.

Usual disclaimer applies: I'm on good terms with all 3 fish shops but I'm not affliliated to them in any way.

    Can't help you there, JS.

But Bioplast is very near to Boon Keng MRT station while the other 2 is nowhere near any. Bioplast, in fact, is just opposite the block where I live.

The best way for your relative to find the fish shops is to pick up a street directory from any petrol station or simply give the address to a taxi-driver. Tell your relative not to visit the shops too early. Over here, they usually won't open for business until it's noon.

JS, use the street names and do a search at http://www.can.com.sg

On the maps, the little blue boxes represent bus-stops and I think it lists the service routes or which buses will stop there. Don't take my word for it as I've not taken public transport for a long time... I'm a biker

    JS,
I found that www.streetdirectory.com.sg is also a very helpful site when visiting Singapore.

    KL,

I managed to go to singapore over the weekend. Been to Bioplast and Mermaid World. Was very hard to catch Melvin thus missed the chance to go Generation X as I went to Mermaid World 3 times but twice he wasn't there. Asked my uncle staying in Bedok to check out Gen X but it seems that the shop is still close at 1pm. Perhaps the owner operates at certain days and hours like Mermaid World?

Anyway, I managed to grap hold alot of mosses... if given more time and not fearing being searched by the custom, I guess I would get more plants and perhaps shrimps. Not sure if it is ok to bring in live fishes into Malaysia. Anyway I bought so much I have to setup another tank for the mosses.

Was very tempted to get the S$100 plus pretty fissiden sold by Mermaid World but the price is just to high especially if converted to RM. Hope in the future the price will drop.

Btw, is it a good idea to keep different type of mosses together in 1 tank? Especially those similar looking mosses? I don't think I can afford to keep specimen tanks. My concern is I don't want to mix them up.

    regards,

Well, JS, it all depends. If it's important to you that your mosses don't get mixed up, then do not keep them in the same tank. But from experience, I can tell you it's damn impossible not to get them mixed up even if you grow them in different tanks. One way or another, the mosses will be accidentally transferred from one tank to another. All it takes is for either one small frond or a small part of it to get into another tank and you will end up with more than one species in the tank. With some mosses, it's quite easy to tell them apart but with others, it's hell impossible. I have to confess I can no longer tell whether I have Christmas or Singapore Moss in my tanks. These 2 look so similar I have given up hope of ever telling them apart. So whenever I send such moss to hobbyists who ask me for them, I always say it's Singapore although it could be Christmas. This is because Singapore can morph into Christmas but not the other way around.

In my main tank, I have Java and Taiwan. I'm very sure what I have on my moss wall there is all Taiwan but I'm not too sure about those growing on the silicon on the corners of my tank. Show you a picture later.

One good thing about mixing up mosses though, is that they will never hybridise. So you don't have to worry about creating a new species of moss. It won't happen although the sperm from one moss can fertilise the female organ of another.

By the way, JS, it did occur to me when I was typing the names and addresses of the fish shops, that one or 2 of them may not be opened when you visit them. That's the reason I also typed in their telephone numbers.

I used to be a delivery boy and one thing delivery boys always do before they make a delivery - They call first

Here's a pic to show you why it's hard to tell the mosses apart once they're all mixed up in your tank. The mosses are growing on the silicon at the edges of my tank. The only thing I'm sure is that most of those higher up are Taiwan Moss while those lower down are Java.
