Hmm.. it should be alot more bluish. The population from Ruhoi River has always been attributed as being blue.

This is the Orchid Notho as described by Seegers (I think?) in one of the earlier TFH issues. Back then it wasn't described yet but images were shown of adult fishes spawning in captivity.

HI there very nice eggersi but I doubt very much that this comes from Ruhoi River, Ruhoi has much broader white margins and this very blue shine on the body. Also I never saw a eggersi from Ruhoi River with that kind of markings in the caudal. Looks like a more north population Ruvu River or Bagamoyo. Nice fish anyway.

Hi there Rodney, welcome to the forum. If you could please introduce yourself and tell us your real name.

Yes the patterning is not similar to the Ruhoi River populations of eggersi. Kee Hoe, if you could please re-confirm with your source.

I am a Notho breeder and have been collecting this year in Afrika also caught some eggersi at Ruhoi River looking very different so I am quite surprised.

I will check with the person why gave me the fish and get back to you guys. Any sample photo on how Ruhoi population should looks like? I seen some with completely blue headed eggersi but the webpage is in japanese. Not sure are that refering to ruhoi population or kilimanis.

    Welcome to the forum, Holger.

We would love to hear of your collection trip in Africa. It would be great if we can see pictures of the Nothos' natural habitats. Do you have any to show us?

This is the data off the AKA website:

    N. eggersi
Populations: Ruhoi; Redhead; Red; Rufiji River Camp TAN 95-7 (Red); Rufiji River Camp TAN 95-8 (Blue); Kikongono TAN 95-9 (Blue); Ruhoi River TAN 95-11 (Blue); Kanga TZ 97-4 (Blue); Utete TZ 97-55 (Red); Ruhoi River TAN 98-11 (Blue); Ruhoi River TAN 98-12 (Blue); Saadani Game Reserve TZ 99-8 (Red); TZ 99-11 (Red); Ruvu River TAN 00-20 (Blue); Bagamoyo TZL-52-01 (Blue); Makurunge FTZ 02-2; Ruhoi River TAN 02-12 (Blue); Kilimani TAN 02-15 (Blue); Rufiji River Camp TAN 02-16 (Red); Rufiji River Camp TAN 02-17 (Red); Rufiji River Camp TAN 02-20 (Red); Bagamoyo TAN 02-28 (Blue); Bagamoyo TAN 02-29
If those are Ruhoi fish, they should be blue rather than red... but the intensity of the blue varies. Some blue fish can show a lot of red. Some of the F1 Bagamoyo TZL fish had a lot of red, where others were more white-blue and others violet. What you have may just be an unlucky outcome from the genetic lottery...

But, my opinion is that those are of the red phenotype which means they are probably not Ruhoi fish. In fact, I think they may be Rufiji 95-8 fish which are vary variable in the intensity of the red. Some of them may look blue in all respects but a lovely red head! I suggest you ask some questions about your fish, as to where they come from and trace them back as far as possible. If they come out of Didier Pillet's fishroom at some point then they are 95-8 fish... Alas, if they were purchased at a show then the pedigree will be lost... which is why pedigrees are far more useful than damned-confusing collection codes!!!

Hope this answer is of some use...

I will strip the location and collection code for the time being until it is verified.

There are pics of the Ruhoi Blue fish on the AKA site. None have red heads, which in my estimation is the hallmark of the "red" phenotype, as even the "blue" fish can have a lot of red in the fins in the form of striations. I think someone should drop Prof. Watters or Ian Sainthouse an email and invite his opinion.

    Regards
