the gymnogeophagus balzanii is the most beautiful to me.

the one in your avator is a young male i had a long time ago.

now i have a species tank for them.
check out my gallery at Gallery

another of my favourite is the G.Jurupari. another south american beauty.

It is a shame that such fish are not getting the attention they really deserve....because planted setups is the mainstay of the more serious aquarists...In Singapore.

Personally, i have 1 Jurupari- Satanoperca leucosticta and a Geophagus brachybranchus.
I think all the earth eaters look beautiful in their own rights Well, if you look closely at the body patterns, they will develop sort of shiny silvery spots on their body as they matures. I am always fascinated by their habits, digging into the gravel, and filtering thru their gills. And sometimes, they almost swim vertically darting slowly upon the surface gravel.
And best of all, the locally bred ones are not too expensive to keep. They will cost you about 10-20 for a appx 2 inches size.

Also the fish that I admire most - Vieja argeatea (Silver Argentea). When it matures around 2 to 3 yrs of age, they develop shiny sliver spots against their white body.

what would be your suggessted set-up for a 100gal tank of eartheaters? types of fishes and how many? tank decor and filtration? am planning to put in surinamensis, red hump, balzanii with some green or golden severums and uaru. would this be ok?

    thanks.

    sounds very exciting

what will the tank dimension be, exactly?

you have a few guys in the list that will get quite big eventually.

you definitely cannot have a planted tank, because even without the eartheaters, the Uaru itself will do a lot of damage.

So, bioload will definitely be high.
one of your premium concerns will be water quality.
the tank will definitely be crowded...so you may have some compatibility issues. this one is hard to tell now...because every fish behaves differently.. the best bet is to raise them from young together, and be prepared to separate some fish that cannot suit in the community (can be either too weak or too strong )

i will use mostly wood and roots in the setup, with fine gravel.

which fishes will grow big eventually?

the 100 gal tank is 6"x2"x2". how many balzanii should be kept together. would it be ok if i just keep one of each kind to avoid agression?

    6x2x2 is bigger than 100gallons!

i was thinking of something like a narrow 5ft tank.

anyway, all the fish in your list are medium-large species
    surinamensis - large,
    red hump- medium
    balzanii - medium
    green or golden severums medium
    uaru - large

when i talk abt large it will be 11" and above potential
medium will be abt 8" or so

anyway, for your tank size, they should fill it in nicely.

i do find balzaniis to be happier in colonies...harems to be exact (one male, many females). THey interchase quite a bit. But harmless.

Uarus also like to stick in groups, but some individuals may be extra nasty to others. With other species they are quite ok though. Uarus are strongly vegeterian.

severums, like uarus, tend to pick on their own kind rather than other fish. My personal preference is green severum.

surinamensis and red hump are quite ok.

my guess is that a severum or uaru may be the source of problem, if there is one. THey have slightly higher tendency to pick on others. But anything can happen. You may just have a tankful of very nice fish, or very nasty balzaniis.

oops sorry, the tank size is 6x1.5x1.5

am really excited to set-up the tank already. am planning to use a 5ft overhead filter.

am also on the lookout for other eartheaters like the centurion and g. gymnogenys

    you living in singpapore?

i had not seen a centurion before..

your 5 ft overhead alone may not be enough for your fish load as they grow. I suggest you get a good canister as they get older. More capacity and of course a peace of mind.

its the one at jalan kelulut along yio chu kang road... Jln kelulut is opp. the shell station along yio chu kang road, after Jln Kayu if you coming from Ang Mo kio. prices are slightly above average but very friendly staff and cichlid conditions are quite good. only Dovii's shop can beat the standard.... can probably get directions from Petfrd or arofan...
