I just raised my KH from 0 or 1 to 5 over the last 3 days, also using baking soda. So far my Blyxa and other plants are looking ok. Will keep you updated.
Hopefully nothing will go wrong cos they are growing quite nicely at the moment. *crossing my fingers*

Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
I don't know why Bj will melt. Don't think is b'cos of the baking soda. As for the ich, it's b'cos of the change in water condition causing your fish to stressed and weaken.
Don't think its the change in KH. I've heard from some guys in the past that their blyxa just died on them as well... speaking of which, I've come to realize that blyxa doesn't seem to like too bright lights... I've got them in my tank, and without doubt the ones in the shady area seem more lush and green while the ones in the bright light seem yellow and frail...

I agree that perhaps ich was due to stress cos' after the kh was up to 3, the ph also went up. Anyway, I did a water change already and didn't bother to add baking soda.
scooby, u though to increase yr KH.. or else, it may result into a PH crash
i think you should include a few more details
1. how long have the blyxa japonica been in your tank?
2. which came first, the ich meds or the melting?
Ok, BJ has been in my tank for close to 4 months. It actully alomst died when I first got it as I don't have base fert. But after I added a monster root, it recovered and was doing well.----------------

Melting came first, then I noticed ich. So that rules out the meds causing the meltdown.
I beginning to wonder if there could be something wrong with my baking soda.
I think I should also add my tank parameters :
Before :
kh = 0 or 1
ph = 5.5 - 6.0
After :
kh = 3
ph = 7.0, went up to 7.5 before stablizing at 7.0
NO2 < 0.3 mg/l
NO3 ~ 5mg/l
Using DIY CO2 at about 1 bubble every 2-3 sec thru a diffuser.
hi sb
how long did you hold at KH of 3 and PH of 7 to 7.5? If this has been on for a week, your water is very lacking in dissolved CO2..the correct PH for KH of 3 should be landing at 6.4 to 6.5.
