It sure looks like an interesting convention, Ruben. I'm curious about a few details.
Is the convention held in a hotel? How many people are attending? Are they going to stay in a hotel during the convention or do people just make their way home after each day's programme? How much would it cost (minus air fares) for someone who does not live in Portugal to attend the convention? How long does it take the organisers whom I presume is the APK to organise such a convention? In other words, do you all prepare for this months or years in advance? How many members do APK have and how many of these members are coming to the convention?
I don't know if we can ever do something similar but it would be good to understand the kind of work involved.
Loh K L
Here it goes...
The convention is held just in the middle of Lisbon's most beautiful park, inside a modern auditorium. This is a natural park, with several wild animals (be cool, we don't have bears, wolves, dangerous snakes, etc).Is the convention held in a hotel?
Here are some pictures of it:
Well, I could say around 500 people (killi-fans, normal visitors, tourists, etc), mostly portugueses but our neighbors from Spain represent the biggest slice of foreigners visitors. How many people are attending?
Normally, our visitors prefer to stay in our peculiar bungalows, in the middle of our natural park. This allows our visitors to keep in touch with nature during that weekend and to forget all that daily pollution. Normally, we know pretty well our friends from other countries attending to our Convention so we try to show them the best of Lisbon during that period. Are they going to stay in a hotel during the convention or do people just make their way home after each day's programme?
We normally say the first one was the hardest. We are having our 5th... We start preparing it 2 months before the event. We start contacting our international friends to know who's coming, who wishes to present our lectures, we start processing all the information we can, sending emails to promote our event, preparing small groups to take care of specific issues such as: t-shirt's printings, who draws the logo, fishes reception, who's going to present the workshops, etc.How long does it take the organisers whom I presume is the APK to organise such a convention?
Well, I think during these 3 days, you can have a very good time for just 200 dollars (bungalow + meals + Lisbon's sightseeing costs). I don't know how much would cost you an airplane's ticket...How much would it cost (minus air fares) for someone who does not live in Portugal to attend the convention?
By the moment, we have 192 members and we hope to have all of them visiting our show. How many members do APK have and how many of these members are coming to the convention?
My friend, 5 years ago we were less than 20! I joined APK 4 years ago... Try to gather all the friends you can who care about killies!I don't know if we can ever do something similar but it would be good to understand the kind of work involved.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, Ruben. I appreciate it very much.
I'm impressed. To be able to round up 500 people to attend the convention is no small feat. Here in Singapore, we can't even get 5 persons to participate in our last mass egg order![]()
I think it's such a cool idea to hold the convention in a nature park. Killifish people are naturally also nature lovers and I'm sure everyone will have a wonderful time. And at 200 dollars (USD, I presume), it's such a good deal.
Perhaps, the day will come when we are able to do something similar but that day seems so far away.

I was heavily involved in organizing and running several West Coast Weekends, which takes on the size and complexity of a national event.
The timing and other aspects of the process are determined by local conditions.
WCW ran for years on the enthusiasm and hard work of two individuals. When they passed away, it took about 10 to fill their shoes (rather badly, at first).
I have hesitated to bloviate here, because I have been something of a cracked record about the need for SG to have a show/convention. On the other hand, each locale has its unique problems that need to be overcome, so my BAKA experiences may have very limited application in another country.
I'll be happy to share how we went about it in CA, if that is of interest in this thread. Please note that much will not apply to the SG situation.

Hello Killi-friends!
Our APK's Killi Convention was a huge success!
This Convention is an event where old friends can meet once again, and compete for a prize in a pleasant and healthy way!
For others (like me), it's a chance for meeting good old experienced killi breeders (keeping killis since I wasn't even born), to change emails, asking for some reliable advices and most of all... TO MAKE FRIENDS!
For those who wish to view our results, please click over the link available at our website (thank you Luis Santos for all the hard work).

Ruben,
The competition pictures are very outstanding. I think I saw quite a few are pictures of Aphyosmenion elberti's, the Killie we very much like to get established in Singapore.
You're making us drool and very jealous but please feel free to post more pictures.
Loh K L
Dear Loh K L:
Yes, kathetys are outstanding!
Here at Portugal, we keep some of the most beautiful kathetys! Thanks to a spanish friend and to APK's former chairman (a kathetys nut - www.vascogomes.net ), I keep at the moment 4 different kathetys (they aren't still mature).
Yesterday, I spent quite a long time just looking at my "Nganga Eboko" colours with a lens... A very strong red, blue and yellow! Incredible...
YOU MUST HAVE IT

Mind telling us a bit about FW BBS? My best guess is that they are some kind of fairy shrimp.

Congrats on a great convention !
The photos are outstanding, and around 500 guests and participants ! Wow, great job, you make the AKA members drool over such a turnout.
Wes
Joseph, you're probably correct. I was browsing through the Brazilian killie email list and they mentioned something called "branchonecta". Apparently the genus is Branchinecta and they're classified as fairy shrimps.Originally Posted by nonamethefish

The correct name is Dendrocephalus brasiliensis, it looks like Artemia salina but I kept them as Daphnias... Pretty funny!Joseph, you're probably correct. There are some articles about them in portuguese, but I don't know if you can find them in english...

Ruben,
Found some errors in the posts. The Diapteron is fulgens, not fulfens, and this following fish :
Labelled as Ep. infrafasciatus rathkei by Nelson Oliveira, it is actually Aplocheilus panchax. Wrong identification.

Thank you stormhawk for telling me these errors. I've just corrected them.Ruben,
