    Joseph,

Carbon filtering was always cheaper for me, when I had 150 tanks going. I had access to Silicon Valley surplus stores, so carbon cartridges were often really cheap. With that many tanks, I used about 2 cartridges per year!

To me it's not even a question of cost. Even if it is 100X more expensive, I would use carbon over formaldehyde-like stuff for any breeding situation, so I don't kill off useful infusoria. Those are excellent first baby food and they, as filter feeders, keep free-swimming bacteria and parasitic flagellates down near zero. The tanks are just plain healthier and Velvet is rare, IMO.

Perhaps when I have time in the summer I will look into it. I don't see much evidence of it killing microrganisms as daphnia/scuds seem to survive in the treated water just fine. Perhps I am too much of a skeptic?

To the fish, they are sexed out but not colored up. I think I can seperate males from females based on fin shape and pattern. The males at this point have longer fin bases, more slender bodies, and faint bands(?) on them. Females have spots or blotches, and have longer fins with short fin bases. Also chunkier in general.

It looks like this is a mostly boys team. Wonder what I should do with all these extra males? I don't think many are interested in trading them for females.

Also, I confirmed using the fry with goiter that Aust. can indeed survive 40 degrees. In fact, they can survive being dumped from 60 to 40 degrees!. I simply tossed this guy out into the greenwater culture and lo and behold I found him still alive...and a little bigger too. The peas etc. I added to encourage the greenwater on might have done him in...if not NGP will be on my list of hardy fish.

Also rewetted the eggs and got maybe 6 more good fry.
