Hi all,

I have this strain of Nothobranchius korthausae

the picture is not the best and the fish is some what washed out, the sides of this Notho are a distinctive blue rather then the bronze of the more familiar mafia island strains.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Stu, its probably something close to the Mafia Island strains. However, it might also be the one from Kwachepa. I can't be certain for sure but if you received these as aquarium strain, then I suppose the yellow forms may have been the original parents of this fish.

Yeah it's a bit of a pain when you don't get the full info Jianyang.

I do have the yellow/brown mafia island strain as well and there way different from them the blue sides make these guys stand out as being something different.

I have googled the Kwachepa but can't find a pic any were.

I know another strain from Kiziko was collected earlier this year by some fellas in Europe, and that too seems a little bluish. Where did you get these male from anyway?

All I found were articles and pdf files, maybe I didn't look hard enough.

Well I would have to say there close-ish but not them.

Looks like I'm back to pounding the key board looking for these guys ID.

If anybody has an idea what they are please yell out.

Was this korthausae from a recent import into NZ or one already being circulated amongst local hobbyists? If it was an import, then please go through some past threads where your attention was required (Sorry, can't remember which thread but it was about NZ live-import licence or something like that. Think I mentioned Stuart too)

Either way, see if you can trace back to the seller/distributor/hobbyist and check if they can be of more help.

I don't know,

I just found them in a pet shop

But the shop owner can't tell me anymore then what I have said.

Other then I believe that this is a relatively knew strain to the "hobby"

They do breed true and in large numbers.

You will never know where those fish came from for certain. Both the mainland and island KOR look indistinguishablely similar. I have bred both strains and a generic aquarium strain.

If you are looking to breed, rather get good eggs from a certain source. This is a lovely fish---one of my favourites! Eggs are normally cheap.

The Mafia TAN 02-5 strains produces both red and yellow fish. Best bang for your buck.

Yes eggs are the way to go Tyrone, I ship many bags of peat around NZ every year.

The problem is as some of our Singapore friends know, that importing fish eggs of any kind into New Zealand is strickle prohibited.

Thats why we have to rely on the authorized fish importers to get our killies.

The last imported killi I bought was A. striatum, luckily I have a wholesale connection so they only cost $30.00 a pair + a lot of freight. If I had to buy retail they may have been selling for $60.00 to $80.00 a pair(neon tetra sell for $1.50 each as a comparison).

We get what we can. , that just means we have to be more careful not to loose anything if it can be avoided.

Given the current paranoia about bird flu, your fish probably did not come from the east but probably from czechislovaki. I suggest you contact Jaroslav Kadlec and ask him what KOR strains are being bread locally.
