Hottonia palustris

Here's a plant that likes cooler temps for you guys with chillers, etc:


Is this plant available in SG? These are cuttings growing out that I made
from 6 rooted cuttings 2 months ago, quite hardy.

I think it should be in SG. This is an Irish plant I think and is a protected species within Ireland itself.

The plant that I have that looks like this is my Proserpinaca palustris. I got this from a shop that was closing down and clearing out plants from the display tank. Its still alive and growing well in a floating position.

Thanks, KL, (nice tank, Lily!) The cuttings have doubled in height since
that pic, hope to take some pics tomorrow after water change and
cleaning the glass It's become one of my favorite plants.

Did a water change today and it is growing quickly with just Flourish excel
for carbon enrichment (plus macros and micros).

As your Hottonia palustris look tall and big in size.

As what i know Hottonia palustris will be short n bushy if strong lighting and Good nutient. It will have many side shoot if grow well.

Just my view.

But your plant is growing very well and the color is very nice.

Hi TS,
H. difformis (Water Wisteria) has irregular indentations on the leaf with
a bump in between each spike compared to the Hottonia. Check the
first photo, no bumps, and uniform indentations.

H. Difformis is not what Bill has. I am quite sure they are Hottonia as the leaves, though quite resemble, are much smaller.

I had seen Hottonia growing very bushy and with lots of side shoots. Yes, they are indeed a sight to behold in that optimum state! Anyone who has seen the plant in such state would easily agree with me that it is the most beautiful stem plants.

I guess what Bill does not have to acheive that is:
1) taller tank - to allow it to grow to mature height and span
2) high lighting - to keep the internode short and more side shoots
3) nutrients that encourage/support that

Having said that, keeping Hottnia alive itself is already a challenge. Well done, Bill.

You're right about the taller tank. I have to keep it pruned (and plant
the cuttings on this 12" high tank about every 2 weeks. Here's another
pic just before pruning time:


The E. tennellus I got from Deborah (Piscesgirl) and it has started to
branch out on its own
