    Hi, everyone,

A friend gave me a present the other day. It's an Eheim classic 2211.

If you don't know what that is, the 2211 is an external cannister filter. It's something new in the market. Previously, for the cylindrical models, there's only a 2213, 2215 and a 2217, I think.

My cube tank is about 150 litres:

And the 2211 is the perfect filter for it:

Unlike the other cylindrical models, the 2211 comes with a base. I guess this filter needs one because it's rather slim and can easily topple over. Besides the other standard accessories, the filter comes with 2 filter mats, one blue and the other white. Filter media is not included, of course.

    Here are the specs:

As you can see, power consumption is very economical, only 5 Watts.

Unfortunately, the outlet is a spray bar which isn't quite suitable for a planted tank. So I used the Eheim elbow instead. One new piece of accessory is a piece of plastic which is used to prevent the hose from kinking. It's quite neat really:

Before I swtiched to this filter, I was using a Eheim internal filter (Eheim 2006). It's rather small and isn't quite suitable for my tank:

I don't want to sound like I'm promoting their brand but I have to say Eheim filters are really reliable. I have a 2013 which has been running nonstop for the last 18 years and it still works perfectly, despite the fact that the shaft in the impeller broke into 3 pieces when I accidentally dropped it a few years ago.

I purchased a 2213 model for my 29g planted tank a month ago and have been very pleased with its performance also. It too came with the plastic hose guard. I ended up turning my spray bar outlets to face the glass to cut down on the turbulence. How often to you clean your Eheim canisters used for your planted tanks, Loh?

    Not often, Duane.

The theory is that filters never need to be cleaned. But in reality, scum builds up along the insides of the hoses and also the impeller. When there's too much scum, the filtration rate slows down to a trickle. When that happens, I dismantle the filter and wash everything thoroughly. The thing to be careful about is the shaft inside the impeller. With the old Eheims, the shaft is made of stainless steel. It's practically unbreakable but they say it wears out over time. The new Eheims use a ceramic shaft which breaks easily if dropped.

Occasionally, I flush out the scum from the filter media. In such instances, I don't dismantle anything. I simply take out the outlet pipe from the tank and let the water flow out into the drain hole in my balcony. When the water is flowing, I give the filter a good shake. I keep shaking until the water that comes out is completely clear.

Thank you for your answer. Your tank is beautiful (I forgot to mention this in my initial post).

The 2211 looks good but for such a size tank, I would still rely on my trusty 2222, which has been chugging along nicely for a long time.

2211 and 2222 are meant for tank size up to 150 Litres.

The 2222 looks more professional (as it is professional series), has more media capacity and flow rate but being squarish, it is meant to stay in the cabinet.

The 2211 looks cute and antique in form. It looks good and can be displayed next to the tank it services.

A few weeks ago a friend loan me a vintage Eheim 2011 which is the precursor to the 2211.

    Kwel Leong,
From your photo, it seems the 2211 does not come with a media basket.
Did you just put the filter media and wool in the canister ?

As far as I know, Gan, the cylindrical Eheims do not come with media baskets. Only the cubic ones do. I'm not using wool as the 2211 comes with 2 filter mats. I'm using ceramic rings and biological gravel, sandwiched in between the 2 mats.

By the way, your 2011 is a real antique. There can't be many of it around so yours could be worth some money.

    Hi Kwek Leong,

For the Eheim 221x series, only the 2213 comes with a media basket. It is very useful as there is a handle and you can pull out all the media using it. Then u can rinse it and put it all back again quickly. Easy maintenance

Thanks for the info, Joe. I never knew the 2213 comes with media baskets. I own two 2215's, one 2013 and a couple of 2006's and they all come empty.

The media backet was added to the Classic series later, probably from customer feedback.

I remember seeing one in a shop in Bangkok, I wanted it quite badly and asked the lady boss if she would sell it to me...

    Brian,

The 2211 isn't on sale in the fish shops yet but it will be soon. The friend who gave it to me works for Eheim. He wanted me to test it and give him the feedback. Thanks for offering me the media baskets. That's very generous of you but I don't need them.

Guess I'll have to wait a little longer. I've been searching for this filter(apart from buying it online), for almost 5 years... What's a little whiile longer..
It's cool. I just thought I'd offer the basket up to someone who needs it, instead of letting it sit around and collect dust.
