    Hi all,

I am new in killifish and in this site. I set up new 280 litres tank. I enter there these killifish.
    A. australe 2 pairs
    F. scheeli 2 pairs
    R. magdalenae 2 pairs

Is there any chance cross between this killifish. Breeder from I got tell me that this killifish don't cros. What do you think about.

I have another 30 litres tank where I want breed this killifish separately. I don't have a lot of space for many little tanks. I think this is good way to breed killifish.

The breeder has a point there, the species you mentioned will probably not cross with each other, but the australe and scheeli are suspect. The Rivulus magdalenae will clearly not cross with the australe or scheeli but they are pretty big-sized for Rivulus species.

The species assortment isn't very good, because Fundulopanchax species, in this case the scheeli will possibly and most likely bully the australes into submission, and may cause stress to the Rivulus as well.

Riv. magdalenae is a pretty drab fish so its colours will not suit the flashy colour of both scheeli and australe.

Thanks for your answer. I have now in this 280 litres tank A. australe and R. magdalenae. All these species are adult. F. schelli have in 30 litres tank because are young and little now.

Australe are all time near bottom of aquarium and Rivulus are near surface. I don't see any conflict between these species. But as you wrote I have fear what happen when I enter adult schelli in this tank. I have there a lot of plants and I think it will be a good cover for australe before schelli. And ability cross australe with schelli is not good information. Breeder who give me these killifishes is breeder of killifish a long time and I talk to him that I want this species to social tank and give me species which don't cross. I try to talk with him about change.

    Hi,

Having kept scheeli and australe for over a decade I am at a loss to give you an answer as to if they'll cross breed. I've always kept my breeders seperate. In the past I've raise australe and scheeli fry and young together without any problems. Though as mentioned by stormhawk because of size differences you might eventually have fin issues. ie. your males won't get picture perfect fin extensions (which is not essential).

If your tank is well planted like you say the combination might work. Like all good fish keepers do, you just have to monitor what's going on and interfere if you think you need to.

If I was you I'll try them all in the community tank and use the 30lt as my breeding set-up. All you have to do isolate the species you want to breed in there for short duration and collect eggs that way. You won't need to worry about hybrids that way.

I am not sure if a scheeli/australe cross will be able to complete it's embroyonic development anyway. It will probably expire before it can hatch. Having never tried or heard or read; I simply don't know.

    Thanks.

Another question. When I want to breed australe in my breeding tank, how many species I give them and which sex?

    1. One pair.
    2. Trios two male and one female
    3. Trios two female and one male
    4. Two Pairs

    Hi again Patrik,

To breed australes you usually need only one pair. They spawn daily in mops or even in peat bowls, according to their own choice. Set up a small spawning tank to house the pair, make sure you condition them well and they'll spawn once they're ready.

The main website - http://www.killies.com has some informative articles on how to house and spawn australes plus notes on how to raise the fry.
