    Vicky,

You can buy peat moss from these 2 nurseries.

    1. Environ-scape services
    No. 14 Hougang Floral Centre
    Tampines Road
    Tel: 6382 3363

    2. Goodwood landscape construction
    565 Thomson Road
    Tel: 6255 2266

Environ-scape is somewhere near Kovan MRT station and Goodwood is one of the nurseries at the foot of Caldecott Hill. I used to buy my peat moss from these 2 places but please take note that they may not have stocks. Call before you visit them or it may be a wasted trip.

The brand I use is called Horti Peat Moss. It comes in a bag which costs about Sing $3 to $4. Some NTUC supermarkets carry this peat moss too so if there's one around your neighbourhood, you may want to take a look there.

Some hobbyists prefer coco-peat to peat moss. But the problem with the former is that there's no clear definition of what's really coco-peat. If you ask for coco-peat in the nurseries, they will point to all sorts of peat which may or may not be suitable for collecting Killifish eggs.

I have settled on using the Jiffy Pellets for all my fish-breeding needs.

They should be available from any major seed catalog, and I think Burpee's et al will probably ship internationally.

The one recommended has always been the No. 7, but many sources here, like K-Mart don't identify them that way. Since I boil a pellet in a 2-cup pyrex measuring cup, in the microwave, and then rinse well under the cold-water faucet, any added fertilizers, fungicides, insecticides, etc. seem to be all removed. The boiled peat also sinks, readily.

All the Jiffy pellets contain some added lime, to reduce their tendency to burn seedlings. Therefore, the pH-lowering properties are less than you might expect. This is a blessing for those with soft water, as peat without the lime can cause serious "pH Crash." Don't expect to see lime on the label, as there is no legal requirement to list it, and US folks have been so brainwashed about chemical additives that such simple things are marketing disasters.

One huge advantage of the lime is that it gives the divalent Ca++ ions a chance to displace the ammonium and that goes right down the drain.

For those not wanting to buy a carton of 1000 pellets, Ruth Warner usually has an ad in the Fish and Egg section of the AKA Business News Letter. Borrow a copy from your local AKA member and e-mail Ruth. I bet she will ship to SG if asked nicely. The postage will be significant, though.

These days, my baled peat gets used in the garden, and maybe (5% by volume) in newly set up tank substrates. I still boil and rinse it to reduce its chemical activity to aquarium levels.

    Sorry about the double posting.

    Killies.com has been spooky, today.

Go to the major NTUC stores and look for this.

A note when using Horti Peat Moss. It contains other materials, not just peat moss, so you'll have to sift through it after preparation via boiling. It can get pretty messy if its your first time using it.

I personally dislike it because it contains alot of small sand particles, twigs, and some other small silvery pieces amongst the moss. I'd go with coco peat over this type of peat anytime, but Wright's suggestion for Jiffy pellets is a good alternative as well.
    Fish.. Simply Irresistable
    Back to Killies... slowly.
