    Hi all,
I received some eggs last week ( several different types).
When the package arrived some had already hatched (Fundulopanchax gardneri gardneri "N'Sukka" ) and some in peat were ready to wet (Notho korthausae Mafia Island TAN 02-05 and Sim constanciae Barra de Sao Joao.) It was my first time with eggs on peat and with an hour they were loaded with fry.It was really very neat to watch. After 48 hours I transferred all fry to three separate boxes labeled them added some Java Moss, small water lettuce and a couple of snails. I also added some vinegar eels and a couple drops of green water. After two days I switched to Micro worms and Vinegar eels. I've been siphoning out waste and add a little fresh water each day and I've had no losses yet ( 6 "N'Sukka" , 21 Simps and 50 plus Norths i was amazed)
Two days in to my first attempt at raising Fish Fry my wife and I gave birth to our second and third child four weeks early. Alls well with mom and our two new baby boys 6lb 5oz and 5lb 9oz Noah and Joshua.
My question was with my new time restraints I'm thinking of not using BBS but trying to use Cyclop-eeze and small grindals. I have several live cultures but no experience with hatching BBS. Do you think the fry will survive. Should I divide up the larger batches of Fry now or can I save time with just three boxes. I had hoped to set up an area to hatch BBS and have the fry well along be for the babies arrived.
    Thanks in advance
    Peter

    Re: Frist time fry

    Peter,
If I haven't said it already, welcome to the forum and congratulations on the arrival of your two new and bigger 'fry'! I can't say these two are easier to handle than those you have in the trays, but it's a different challenge altogether.

From what I've read so far, you're doing great but with the new responsibilities as a father, I'd suggest you further split the hatchlings into more containers (especially the Nothos), which are very prone to mass die-offs due to velvet in poor husbandried tanks.

Stick to what cultures you now have until the fry are ready for grindals. BBS is good but you don't need more work now and I know too well how distracting the little fellas can be.

Do add more java moss and snails to help maintain water quality during times of neglect and please keep us posted.

Something tells me that you'll do just fine.
I'm back & keeping 'em fingers wet,

    Fry

    Thanks Ronnie,

Well a little over three weeks and all seems to be going fine. The boys are keeping us up all night , but it great. The fry seem to be doing great also. I hatched a couple more from water incubated eggs ( 5 Aphyosemion celiae "Ebonji" and 5 Aphyosemion bitaeniatum "Benin City")
The fry appear to be growing ok without BBS and the Northos and Simps are taking Grindal worms now. I been doing a 25% to 50% water change a nite cleaning out the snail droppings and dead worms. I have only had about 2 or 3 fry die after a count tonight, I was suprised.

I was wondering with 60 Northos how soon do you think they could make a switch to a 10g planted grow tank and is this too many. Also same scenario with 20 Simps constanciae. The three others I thought I'd move to a 2.5G tank in a couple of weeks.I'll try to post a picture of the fry nursery.

    Thanks Peter

Not sure how I could have missed the followup but I think by now you would have already shifted the young juvenile to those 2.5gal tanks. Hope all is well with them and the two kiddos.

Since the growth rate of juvenile is never predictable, it's best to sort them out by size, space and tanks allowing. From your pic, it looks awfully like mine, with containers and tanks all stacked up.

Are the rest of the fry doing ok? I'm guessing the Aphyosemion celiae "Ebonji" and Aphyosemion bitaeniatum "Benin City") are about 1cm by now?

Good luck, Peter, with water changes during the day and diapers by night!
