I had been hatching brime shrimps for few months now (late starter ). The hatching part is fine but I do not seems to be good in keeping the shells out. This is how I am doing it:
    1) I am using the popular 1.5L soft drinks bottle with cut bottom and hang it upside down with air supply through the bottle's cap.
    2) I drip the hatched shrimps onto coffee filter and stopping it just before the solution runs out (about 1 inch above the cap).
    3) The filter traps the shrimps but so are some of the shells (not much though)

Any better way to keep out the shells?

    A couple of comments:

In my experience, the ones that do not float are not empty shells. They are unhatched cysts. Sometimes one can reject the first teaspoon or two and eliminate them.

If they are unhatched cysts (i.e., they sink), I have used the following to increase the hatch:

--Wait a bit longer before collecting.

--Use lower salinity, which usually gives quicker hatch.

--Place a reading lamp nearby, as the hatch rate is a bit photosensitive. As I recall, 2000 fL is needed. That's really quite bright. The heat also speeds the hatch. I like 25-30C but never above 35C.

--Best of all, purchase high-yield cysts that have been stored properly. My AKA bbs are essentially free of unhatched cysts after about 20 hours.

    Thank you, Wright.

Good pointers. I will try that in my next brine shrimp hatch.
