My motto: Love thy snails! You can help keep the numbers down by not over-feeding your fish, and the handful of snails that roam in your tank will eat algae for you. I'm very dependent on my red ramshorn (rams' horns) for housekeeping. They eat different varieties of algae than shrimp, so together, they make a very good cleaning crew. If you can maintain a GH of 4 or 5 and pH not lower than about 6.8, the shells will grow beautifully, actually *adding* to the aesthetics of your tank. I even like the looks of the Malaysian trumpet snail, although they're not as beneficial in a planted tank as the ramshorns. Enjoy them.
