That is Simpsonichthys sp. aff. stellatus. Locality is the city of Urucuia, Minas Gerais state, Brazil.

Wilson Costa thinks that it is just a geographical population variant of Simpsonichthys stellatus, but the tail pattern is very different from the usual stellatus form. I don't have the exact details on the collection for this species, but I suppose the Brazilian killie folks should know.

    Jian Yang,
Pattern and color variation is to be expected and have seen some with a 'e' and '@' caudal markings. Those in the pics are descendents from my own lot of "Urucuia" population and are now under the care of another hobbyist.

    Choy,
Six months is a long stretch for me to recall anything accurately and since I've consigned out so many Chromaphyosemion species (plus it's a young specimen), it hard to say with absolute certainty but I'll wager on bitaeniatum "Ijebu Ode" (or "Lagos" but unlikely a "Majitam" )

BTW, I think it'd be a good idea if you can note or edit the details during photo shoot sessions.
I'm back & keeping 'em fingers wet,
    Ronnie Lee

That's quite true because this species has no set tail pattern. Each individual fish probably has a unique tail pattern to itself, but one thing is for sure though. The pattern is always in a zig-zag radiating pattern with differences amongst individuals. They remind me of a flame actually.

A recently described species in 2004 called Simpsonichthys radiosus, shows a similar tail pattern with this Urucuia population, but it is located quite a distance away from the city of Urucuia, hence this population is not identical to the species radiosus, which hails from the rio Crixas floodplains, near the city of Formosa, in Tocantins state.

Choy, the unknown BIT looks like a female Ijebu Ode to me as well, but it's hard to be sure since Ronnie himself cannot recall what is the exact population of this fish in question.

for the Simp, if Costa think they might be the same we should use cf. instead.

but the BIT is actually a male, because I have the drab colourless female pix too.

I would still go with sp. cf., since that was how they were originally labeled. I know the original collector.
