i've heard of several liquid ferts being used by fellow forumers. but what exactly is the difference between these liquid ferts? in terms of mineral composition, quality, cost effectiveness?

It depends on whether you wish to micro-manage your fertilization regime or not. If you want to maximize your plant growth as well as beauty..micro-manage is the only way to go as other method is just trial and error way to find whether this type of fert is suitable for your tank or not.

It depend on how well one knows about the hobby and how far one wish to go in promoting good plant health. In my opinion, for less than a year hobbyist, go for no frill comprehensive fert like JBL, Tetra, Denerle, Dupla, etc. Just follow instruction and get a good start first.

For more experienced ones, the obvious choice is Seachem. It provides the widest range of traces products. One can dose according to the plant needs. However, they have to be supplemented with K and in some cases also NO3 and PO4.

I just saw yesterday the Sera Florena Plus. This new product contains also macro, meaning K, NO3 and may be (but unlikely) PO4. Try the "Plus" version.

To date, I've only tried 2 ranges of ferts... namely dennerle, TMG.

In comparing Dennerle and TMG, I would have to admit that dennerle seems to be a slightly better fert... However, the costs for this are much higher when contrasted to TMG. TMG, comes a very close second...

So my thoughts are this, from my limited experience with ferts, If I have to recommend a fert to a rich man (i.e. money is no object) then I would say Dennerle.... But if I have to recommend a fert for the cost effectiveness, then I would push TMG.

    Allen,

2 years ago, when I first saw TMG and also had heard good comments on it. However, there are different way that people are dosing it.

What is your method in dosage calculation and frequency?

Do you know the nutrients content of TMG/Denerle?

    FC,

For TMG the recommended dosage is 1ml/10L of water... I have tried different regimes of dosage including a 1 shot 35ml dose... or a 10ml dose at water change and 5ml daily... both did not seem to make much difference. What seems to make a difference is the addition of 20-30ppm potassium... With that, I find that the TMG gets depleted faster (seen by a slowdown in bubbling), and I find myself now dosing about 50ml weekly... 35ml initially followed by 10-15 midweek... The contents of TMG are well published, and are actually stuck on each bottle. you can check this old thread were I published the contents

As for Dennerle, I have no idea whats inside...

Allen, I feel that it may be the K in the Dennerle E15 that make the difference.

Personally, I use Seachem's Flourish and Equilibrium. Have very good results.

Perhaps so... do you have a chemical analysis of Dennerle Ferts? I've yet to find one... would love to know whats in the stuff.

No. I infer from the description of E15. "With 'white' bivalent iron. With essential potassium and manganess".

Hmmm... that doesn't mean very much to me... Actually I've always considered E15 to be essentially an Iron tablet, much like JBLs Ferrotabs. Its V30 and S7 which I'm very keen to get a chemical breakdown.

    FC,

Speaking of TMG, perhaps it would be good to check with Jacian on his dosing regime... I know he's been using TMG, and after all he's the one with the "results"...

    Contents of TMG :
    K 0.79% Mg 0.39% S 1.01% B 0.004% Cu 0.006% Fe 0.07% Mn 0.04% Mo 0.002% Zn 0.002% HEEDTA, DTPA, E123

I follow the recommended dosage, which is 1ml to 10l. With this dosage, it would increase the Fe level by 0.07ppm. I believe this is a good level of Fe in the water column. For more Fe, I would be adding laterite balls into the substrate. Next, I monitor the nitrate level, target 5ppm. I would add KNO3 is nitrate is below 5 and K2SO4 if nitrate is above 10ppm.

If K2SO4 (up to 20ppm) failed to bring down the nitrate, I would suspect others as the limiting nutrient.

How do you calculate the TMG's dose, I mean based on amount of water change or the whole tank volume?

How do you guys judge a plants' health? I knew some judgement based on leaf's size and thickness.

I usually dose TMG according to the full tank volume. As for plant health, basically look at the leaves, size, color, any deficiencies signs etc...
