2 first. NO! RO water must be blended with some good tap water. It lacks many nutrients essential for most life.

AUS are estuarine fishes from coastal Gabon (e.g. Cape Lopez). They tolerate somewhat harder water, and may even benefit from a bit of salt. Pure RO water is almost surely harmful to them. Remove the chloramine when you blend with tap water (Amquel, Prime, Ammo lock 2, etc. or carbon filter and TEST before using).

1 Purchased breeding mops are worthless, IME. It is easier to buy a dark color of soft acrylic knitting yarn and wrap it 100 times around a book. Tie it a one end and cut the other to make a very full (200-strand) mop. You may want to zap it for a minute or two in the microwave, in a cup of water. That will eliminate any excess dyes. Rinse in cold tap water. Excess boiling can ruin softness in some acrylics, so go a bit easy on the heat.

Use it as is for sunken, or tie to a wine cork or other float to make a floating mop. I usually use two or more in all but the smallest tanks. That gives extra hiding places for the female.

Whuntley, thanks for the advise. Guess I will not use RO water but instead of water after the sand and carbon filter.
