    Hi.

I picked, somewhere, that Xmas mos, V. montagnei has been given a new name.. Vesicularia dubyana var. abbreviata.

    Can anyone confirm this.

Where did you see the name, Martin? I was just talking about Christmas Moss (V. montagnei) last week with Chishio Hidaka but she made no mention that there's a new name for this moss.

    http://www.aquamoss.net/Moss-List.htm

    http://www.aquaristik-live.de/pflanz...,start,60.html

what got me started looking was Troels from Tropica mentioned this name.

it seems, if you do a search that it is a recognized name, but most scientific sites don't use xmas moss name or any other.

    perhaps it's nothing...

The problem with the Aquamoss site is that they don't tell us who's the authority behind the names. If you noticed, they also list Peacock Moss and Spiky Moss being different mosses when we have already established that they are the same moss.

The folks behind Aquamoss obviously have a great passion for mosses but I wish they would work with us, instead of doing things on their own. Together, I'm quite certain we can contribute to the hobby a lot more.

    Hi KL, hi Martin,
bryophyte taxonomy is very difficult, for known issues. Multiple nomenclatures and false friends did more than enough for confusion.

    The references are:
Vesicularia montagnei (W. P. Schimper in Montagne in Ramo|4n de la Sagra) Brotherus, 1908 - M
Vesicularia dubyana var. abbreviata Fleischer, 1923 - M
    Q: http://www.mobot.org/MOBOT/tropicos/most/bryolist.shtml
Also available at: http://www.tropicos.org/Name/35126756 and http://rmbr.nus.edu.sg/sinu/mal_moss/mal_moss_v.html
All referenced scientific sites shows that this species are not identical.

The mistake is reproducible at several other German sites:
    http://www.crustawelt.de/wbb/thread....339e7dc1648df8
etc. p.p. And not all are commercial like aquamoss.
Edit: I think this are also false friends or a kind of branding. Dennerle sells a different Riccardia for Mini-Pellia, don't they?

Anyway, I'll trust the academic sites and especially Prof. Tan BC., who know all three, the moss, the scientific and its common name.

    Regards Uwe

    Too true.

I ask because the name popped up at work, and I was miffed to hear V. montagnei with a new name?

I will have to dig deeper to figure out who at work found this name, and where.
    Kindest Regards,

    Martin
