Redness below otos

Hi guys, I've got 3 otos and all 3 of them are showing redness below the area of their tiny suckers. My tank is a established planted tank though it is only 3 weeks old. Checked the KH (2) and pH (6.4). Also checked the nitrate and it is ok.

They dun seem very active as compared to when I first got them 1 week back. They're still sucking around but looks very lethargic. Are they sick with some disease?

Hi,
Research had proved that even using chemicals like Cycle etc wouldn't be able to cycle your tank in 3 weeks, will at least need 4 weeks and above. Maybe you should try testing for ammonia or nitrite instead of nitrate.

Anyway, I'm recently thinking if adding bird **** will help contributing ammonia instead of using clorox... I wouldn't suck the water for sure

Thanks Goondoo!!! The external filter was running for like 3 to 4 weeks in another tank prior shifting over to here. I would assume the bacteria would have settled in the filter media already.

The redness below the otos are still there. Anyone can help?

sign of nitrite poisoning
change the water immediately
i recommend 30% followed by 1/2 tbsp salt per 20l of water
this is to stop the uptake of residual nitrite

thanks DEA ... already done a 30% water change and 1 tsp salt per 20liter last night ... the redness is subsiding [:]

Moral of the story,

"Running your external filter in another tank won't help you establish your tank in three weeks"

yeah but luckily the otos all survived ... probably due to the salt bath and 3 days water change regime ... kudos to all the pple here!!!

anyway, i think you might have overloaded the tank
otos are usually the last to show nitrite poisoning ime
