I have been using the surface skimmer for half a year and it functions well. However, fries tend to get sucked into the filter, and once in a blue moon, endlers went lost and found in the filter as well. The bottom inlet of the skimmer is rather narrow, thus I guess it is usually the surfacing skimming part that curious fishes and fries entered the other world.

Anyway to prevent this? Add a netting to somewhere?

You can add net at the bottom inlet but adding net at top inlet will hinder the surface skimmer. Why not adjust the inlet? reduce the top inlet flow

I was thinking of adding a net at the connection between the hose and the skimmer. But then it'll be tedious as I have to clear the net VERY often, especially so since I have mini-riccia in my tank. My top inlet flow is already set very low.
