2236 is only 600 l/h, after some media, it is expected to loss 30% of it, left with 420 l/h.
In my opinion it is too weak for 3ft in the first place, especially planted tank you need good circulation.
I'm using Ecco 2236 for my 3ft planted tank. Notice the flowrate isn't going strong enough. I've got this filter less than 3 months and so far washed and clean twice. I'll followed exactly the use of media from Ehiem's instruction manual. Wonder what may caused the weak outflow - maybe the inflow basket is filled with net and surrounded by too lush plants?
Should I look into reducing a tray of media i.e. substrat pro, or add on another filter? The weak flow in the tank has resulted in bba growing, I think.

Yeap Robert, you are right. I just returned from NA and Chan told me it's a little weak, but considered ok for a 3ft tank. I just find the flow weak. Bros, what are your recommendations? Add another filter? Which type is good? I have the following fauna: 10x jumbo cardinal, 3x bristlenose plecos, 8x M erythromicron, 12x dwarf corys, 5x brochans, 5x dwarf gourami, some malayan shrimps.

Should I put in an internal filter i.e. Eheim pickup? 2 cannister filters look kind of wierd - may as well change to a bigger Eheim Pro.

you can consider using a power head to improve the circulation.

At what flowrate should I be looking at? 600 - 1000 l/h? What is the recommended powerhead I should consider?

I have been getting confusing information regarding the relationship between flow rate and algae, I know one school of thought is that low flowrate cause algae, but according to Dennerle, High flow rate will cause algae, so I do not know if this is the one single factor to be targeting for algae prevention.
This is an interesting question. I was told by Chan (from NA) that bba grows on the area with high flowrate i.e. area around the outflow pipe holes etc. However, mine has grown in areas where the water is supposed 'stagnant' or almost non-flowing. As Bro Thomas has suggested, I will try to put an extra powerhead and see what happens.

mine's 4 footer and I running on 2 canisters ATMAN cf1200 and eheim 2028...just nice
As I understand, Ecco is the Eheim model designed especially for planted tanks, and the main characteristic that make it suitable is it's low flowrate....so by going for higher flowrate I am not sure if it will solve the issue, assuming that they got it right by saying lower flowrate is more suitable for plants.
