    Hi,

Got a question that i faced with my java fern setup. What happens is that after some time, the older leaves near to the driftwood will turn brown and die off and new leaves will form on it and these are usually not rooted to the driftwood.

The whole bunch will start to look untidy. So does it means that i got to remove the whole driftwood and retie all the new leaves to it eveytime this happens? I have quite afew of such driftwood in my tank and removing them and retying will stir up the tank and cause quite a disturbance.

Is this the only way of maintaining java ferns?

    Thanks!

the base (root area) of the plants where you tie to your driftwood is where new buds would form and make new leaf.

so you just have to trim away your old brown leaves. leave the roots alone

Just trim the brown ones away, but be very careful not to trim the adjoing roots. I had mine tied to the driftwood turning brown after being migrated from the old tank, but new leaves are sprouting nicely. So dont worry too much.

Ferns like other plants need regular prunning too.

Ferns have new leaves budding out from the surface of old leaves too

Hi, thanks for all the info.

My case was that new leaves starts to sprout from the old brown leaves with their roots free hanging so it whole bunch starts to get dislodged from the driftwood. Looks like they need retying which is going to get messy.

    Thanks!

Just cut those leaves, leaves with new plantlet sprouting on it will die/rot soon. Is y our fern just bought from LFS (les than 2 months)? If so, that leaves is emerse leaves and it will rot, nothing to be worry about. If you want to go to the extrem, when you tie the fern, cut all the leaves and leave only its rhizome. New leaves will come out from rhizome. It is also make easier to tie.
