I've seen many planted tanks where lots of the plants slant quite steeply towards the back of the tank. Even the same species of plants can me made to have that contour. But I've no idea how it is done. Can any experts please advise how it is done?

In addition, in Dutch aquariums, they build terraces. Acrylic partitions, rocks and bogwood are some material they use.

It depends on what you want to slant... the plants or the substrate (as per BCLee's reply). If your look at Amano's tanks, some of them have very high terraces created with rocks or wood.

My substrate is already sloped at 10-20 degrees to the back but I believe it will gradually become flat.
What I'm thinking of is sloping the background plants. Say for example amazon swords can look real good when they are sloped. How do I go about achieving it? Using a combi of partitions and wood? The plants make a difference too right??

Well, if the plants are the same size, to keep the slope, or make steep slopes, then you have to terrace. If you know the max size of the plants, then plan accordingly.

Here is an article "Secrets to Dutch Aquascaping" on Aqua Botanic that you can refer to. You will need some wood or rock and some partition to prevent the substrate from levelling out by itself.----------------
