Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
Looks like I am quite....out of place here....
Most members are either young or middle-age....and I'm over 50.....wow....
Thanks anyway...

Andrew, I think it will be great if you could give us a brief intro about yourself and your journey in the aquarium hobby. I understand from Stan that you are very experienced with discus (avoiding the word "expert" so as not to make you feel more uncomfortable).

I think very experienced is an understatement. I will let Andrew introduce himself in anyway he sees fit. Anyway, nice to see you here Andrew.

Welcome to the forum Andrew!

Welcome Andrew!
I would not have thought of inviting you here if Vinz did not ask me to.
I need some places to hide from you, you know.
[They say familiarity breeds contempt... hehe]
Wish you the best on your 2nd "Discus The Naked Truth" book!
Really enjoyed the first one. Maybe your second one will bring me back in from my 'wild' obsession at the moment.
Perhaps you can embark on corydoras breeding techniques from your perspective. [if you already haven't done so!] Guppies and swordtails are nice but not really my cup of tea but please do share some tidbits as the members here have very wide ranging tastes.![]()
You can if you dare to fail - Stan Chung
Hi Andrew Soh ,
Welcome to the forum.....
Thank you guys for the warm welcome and I am feeling young already
I agree Luenny......"Had experienced a lot of failures in the past" is a more appropriate phrase.....I think very experienced is an understatement
But then again, willing to learn from failures will make us wiser and a better chance of success in future endeavour...........unfortunately...I am still riding on the learning curve....ha!ha!ha!
Will see you guys in the sub-forums.
Yes, Live bearers were my former farm's main production for a period of 10 years. Still keeping them as hobby though.....
As for discus......I am 53....and started at 19.....wow..shy to minus....only make me more out of place....
Ciao...talk later,
Andrew

Hi Andrew, welcome to AQ. are you keeping livebearer species?
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

halamak and I thought you might have lobangs for species of livebearers. the recent addition of 20+ species in Poecilia alone makes it a nice genus to mess with.
However I am also interested to see the "common livebearers" in their natural forms. In your breeding experience, do you have to bring in fresh wild specimens to inject some vitality into the gene pool?

Yes I do....but will take 6 generations to perfect them. Anyway, this is a wrong thread to discuss this.....maybe start a new thread to discus your concern? In your breeding experience, do you have to bring in fresh wild specimens to inject some vitality into the gene pool?
Take care,
Andrew

We're discussing something at the administrators level. But have to wait a while as we're not all contactable at the moment.

Welcome mr soh..
not old not old.. keeping fish makes us all young..![]()
Hello Guys,
It's really o.k.....to be a junior member......that title keeps me young......
Vincent, I have listed my past indulgences/invovements with fish-related activities as per your request.
It is a standard format I kept in my computer.....hope it is not too bluntin presentation.
I started discus-keeping back in 1973 and in 1989, transformed the hobby into a business venture, known as Associates Aquarium Pte Ltd specializing only in discus. Later on, acquired a piece of 1.95 hectares land in 1994 to expand into other ornamental fish production.
1995 to 2001: Served as Secretary of the Singapore Aquarium Fish Exporter Association
Present portfolio: Regional Consultant; Farm cum Hatchery design and Creation of healthy and pathogen-free live-bearers’ brooder-stocks for regional commercial farming/mass production.
Besides being invited as lecturer for the local farmers and trainees under the government body, Agrifood and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA), I have given many talks during Ornamental fish events locally and overseas which include:
Aquarama 1995, Seminar speaker ‘Discus Health’
Aquarama 1997, Conference speaker ‘Intensive culture of Artemia’
Aquarama 1999, Seminar speaker ‘Sexing of Discus’
Agrifood 2000, Seminar speaker on ‘Creating new Guppy’
Interzoo Germany 2000, Conference speaker ‘Ornamental fish culture in Singapore’
Sri Lanka 2002, the only speaker for 2 days workshop ‘Good husbandry and export practices’ – specially invited by the Fishery Department of Sri Lanka
4th International Discus Competition Germany 2002, Seminar speaker ‘Sexing of discus’
Bagalore, India 2006, Seminar speaker ‘Discus health and treatment’
Cochin, India 2007, Conference speaker ‘Management, Disease control and Autopsy of fishes’ plus workshop – specially invited by the fishery Department of India
ACA Sacramento, USA 2007, Conference speaker ‘Discus health, Disease and Treatment’
BIDKA, Bristol, UK 2008, Seminar speaker ‘Best discus practices disease control’
Besides judging in some of the local discus shows, he was a discus judge for the following overseas events:
Discus Competition 2001, Indonesia
1st Discus Championship 2002, France
4th International Discus Championship 2002, Germany
ACA Discus Championship 2007, USA
BIDKA Discus Championship 2008, United Kingdom
Written a book titled “Discus, the Naked Truth” in 2005 and a new book on discus to be released in first quarter of 2009 titled “Discus, Problems and Solutions”
Thanks and take care.
