Just got a new 4 ft tank from my friend and have been wondering what to put in it. There are lots of huge rocks as it used to be for cichlids...my mum's been eyeing angelfish, but I heard they're more for a species tank. Not really suitable for mixing with other fish as they tend to get a little vicious sometimes.

However, I have seen angelfish mixed together with cardinal tetras sometimes...anyone have any advice with regards to how I can put other fish should I decide on angelfish?

    thanks a lot

Hi bro, I have comm my Angelfish with Loaches and Polyterus. Think the bigger Corydoras and smaller Plecos should be ok too. Smaller fishes like Cardinal and Neon might just end up as their snacks.

Do not kept Tiger Barbs or other fin nibbler with them.

Warmest Regards from Merviso aka Merv Soh

I would highly recommend rummy-nose tetra and/or harlequin rasbora. For a 4ft tank, you can afford to put in a fair number of rummy-nose, up to 50 I think, depending on how many angels you will have in there.

Test your water, African cichlids (Malawi/Tanganyika) prefer alkaline water, if I'm not wrong, but angels prefer slightly acidic water, which is why normally bogwood is used since they are known to release tannins that acidise the water.

Rummy-noses are great to determine the quality of your water. If your water is good, their noses have a deep red colour, whereas if the water quality deteriorates, their noses become pale.

The larger tetras would go well with angelfish. Nothing the fits their mouth or fish too fast for them to catch! Serpae tetra, Lemon Tetra etc.

Serpae tetras might get a little nippy for angelfish...perhaps try bleeding hearts, rosy tetras, diamond tetras etc

I mixed my angel fishes with cories, dwarf gouramies, zebra denois, plecos and tetras.
Four months already, so far so good.
Removed some platie as they attempt to nip the tail and fins of the angels.

My angelfish would eat up anything smaller than large swordtails. It gets really excited when small fishes were introduced into the tank. Successfully kept them with Congo Tetras which the anglefish had left them alone.

I once had my angels gang up on one of my X-ray tetra (Pristella maxillaris), they took turns to bite on the tetra until it is finally gone.

Don't be mistaken that the fish needs to fit their mouth and be swallow whole before it is considered prey.

wow...okays... I guess I'll just stick to the congos and perhaps with some harlequins and swordtails...is it me or do most fish shops not sell swordtails. If they do it's mostly the orange ones not the darker red ones. Is there a difference?

c328 do sell swordtails and i saw it last week. It's usually packed with 2 orange swordtails. You can simply find it in the tank on the left side of the cashier..

    Re: Angelfish community tank with...

Hi just wanted to ask something along this tread.

I am new to this also and i am currently starting a planted aquarium for angelfish. I hear that there are some fish which will tend to the plants in the tank.

Is there any idea what kind of fish that is? And is that type of fish compatible with the angelfish?

There are no fishes that tend to plants, except maybe to eat it. But there are some like the oto that helps to keep your algae growth down. They are compatible with angelfishes.
