    AS for young discus:

    Food high in protein

    As for adult...generally...lesser in protein

But all in all, vitamins are very important in discus' diet

The range could be anything from aquatic animals like moinas, tubiflex or bloodworms.....but deterring factor is most carry pest or pathogens which during climatic changes trigger proliferation and infestation.

The safer staple food would be animal meal...beefheart or porkheart or even chicken heart....anything away from the aquatic source. Simple logic is they generally do not carry the same pest as aquatic animals.

    Take care,
    Andrew

Yes, dry feed is acceptable....but because of the process in manufacturing dry feed, growth rate may differ...and wet feed seems to be better but the final growth potential may eventually be the same.

    Hi Steed,

You can try Andrew's own Pro-growth if you intend to make your own heart/meat mixes. Potent stuff. For breeding you can use his Pro More.

for beef heart, it's better to mix your own than to buy the prepared mix at C328. I find that the commercial mix has alot of fat, the meat looks pale (not fresh) and it disintigrates easily and fouls the water. self-mixed is alot better.

Yes but will cloud the water.

Best to throw the liver chunks into boiling water for 10 secs before grinding with beefheart.

    Hi Steed,

There many recipes on the net. The important thing is to remove all the fat, grit, tendon and grind as fine as possible.

I normally keep it simple. Just the BH + some vitamins that are B complex based + colouring of choice. Some tetrabits or if you can find it, astaxanthin or it's synthetic version for red fishes. If using Carophyll pink, mix it in some water before you put if in the BH. a little coffee stirrer amount + 20 ml of water, mix evenly and mix with the ground BH.
Put in ziploc bags, flatten to about 5mm and make indents so that small pieces can be broken easily for easy portions.

Feed a little at a time to make sure most of it end up in the fish's stomach and not cloud up the water.

A good snack for them in between BH meals are live brineshrimp that I've seen sold at C328. Clean frozen bloodworms are also good for convenience.

Remember to sponge the wall sides and do a large water change and hour after a BH meal.
I presume you are keeping them in a bare tank.

For planted tanks, it's better you feed whole foods like FBW[frozen blood worms] and FBS[Frozen brine shrimp]. Live brineshrimp is highly recommended. If not, most domestic discus could be trained to eat quality pellets like New Life Spectrum, Tetrabits, etc.
