Nicky, 2x150watts is just nice for usgae with some highlight plants directly below the lights and slow plants at the side.. yr required total wattage depends greatly on the aquascaping and plants used
I did a search on the MH lighting reqm of a 6x2x2 and found that most people suggested only 2x150W.
If my calculation is right, 6x2x2 will hold about 170gallon and so why is 300W sufficient (<1.7W/G, right?).
I hope my calculation is right. I just paid full for 3x150W MH lights..[]

Hi Nicky

The title below my name does not make me a guru...listen at your own risk!...
hmm...is it safe to say, for MH lights, it depends on the plant requirements and the 3w-gallon rule of thumnb is not uphold?

nic, IMHO... yes
This is how I understand it. MH light will cut right through the water to the bottom of the tank. The effect you have with one MH is a bright area under the light and the surrounding area is not so bright. 2 MH for a 6ft is to give better coverage. Plan your plants accordingly. And MH lights will cast very strong shadows, so consider that when planning your layout.

Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
