Hi
I was just curious and would like to ask if you guys arrange your filter media in the basket nicely before starting your filter. What I mean by arranging is to place your media, be it biohome or ceramic rings etc, such that it is in the closest packed position so that you can fit the maximum amount of filter media into the given filter volume.

Yes! I will stack ceramic rings and biohome nicely so as to put in more media. Think the efficiency will be better too.

Actually, IMO, you should not.
The point of the ceramic rings is to create random channels and eddies to trap large debris or cause them to drop out of the current and to the bottom of the filter. If you arrange them too neatly, the current will remain too strong and the large debris will have a through road to the finer filter media where their bacteria that decomposes them will out-compete the beneficial bacteria that we want.
Biohome does not have the above problem because of their shape, but if you pack too tightly, you end up reducing the flow.
For me, I just shake the basket so they settle tighter, then top up and shake some more.
