FAKE SAE bought from Gans

Gan should be able to tell the difference, I'm surprised if he got it wrong. Did you not check before you left?

Anyway, if you can, post a picture of them here. Forumers can help you confirm the id. If you are really sure, give Gan a call and see if he can do an exchange or something.

To be honest, I have seen fake SAEs at Gans (not flying foxes). Though like Vinz I'm a little surprised if you got the fake SAEs when buying SAEs.

In general, the differentiators are...

SAE - light golden body coloration with a dark stripe in its tail and no stripe in the top fin
Fake SAE - similar body coloration though a bit more dull, with no stripe in its tail and no stripe in the top fin
Flying fox - dark body coloration with a dark stripe in its tail and a dark stripe in its top fin.

i dun have a digi cam to show you guys.

the "fake" SAE,

*no whisker near the mouth
*have a golden strip just above the black line through out the whole body.
*does not have black strip extended to though the tail fin.
*have slight yellowish, orangeish fins.
*they have never stop swimming and never ate any algae from yesterday when i put them into the tank.

as for the whether i've check before i leave. Yes i did take a gd look at the fish. the fish were all in shock (colourless) due to the packeting. And a second thought i doubt that Gans will make a mistake.

yup...i bought 2 from Gan 3 weeks ago oso fake...
but i just left them in my tank as they were..tried to catch them...but.....

anyway...bought another 2 from NA leow..=)

Those pictures in TheKrib are drawings so it may be difficult to identify them.

I have 2 pictures here which I hope can help those who has difficulty in how to identify those few fish.

This is SAE for sure. The black strip reaches all the way to the end of the tail and it should be pointed.


This is the FALSE SAE. The black strip stopped at the fin and they have a yellow strip on the top. I have to admit that they looked really like the SAE when young since most LFS sells them when they are juvenile.


Do correct me if the info I put above are wrong.

what i got is in the second picture. sadly i bought 11 of them i wonder how am i gonna catch them. the are known to be aggressive when reach adulthood

You are right. Once the False SAE reaches adulthood, they will start to chase after your SAE. But they seems to live the rest of the fish alone.

They can be bullies!

After reading this thread, I must admit Gan's current batch of SAE are fake. I had bought 2 of them on Tuesday. I observed the way they swam - not like the way the real SAE "flutters" when swimming. They did a "jerking" kind of swim instead. And the body black line did not extend into the tail. There's also a golden stripe above the black line. All tell-tale signs of fake SAE.

We thankyou to bring up this subject of false SAE; without your feedback, we will never notice the problem.
We will verify this with our supplier and make sure the next batch comes is OK. Meanwhile, you can bring back all purchased false fish for exchange.
