i cannot have african now coz my tanks all fully taken up.
ordering 2 more tanks one just came but still not enough...

i like a few species.
tilapia buttikoferi...not the "typical african" in terms of size and requirement
tropheus all of them
frontosas
many malawis i dunno the names

i will like to have an african tank but cannot do that in the near future

Tilapias are cool...but they grow just too darn big to even consider.

I love Tropheus too , but sadly TANK NO ENUFF

I like Tropheus very much. But don't seem to be very popular in sg. In other countries it seem to be one of the hottest cichlids. people have colonies of them []

somehow tropheus are seen as a "cliche" cichlid to get in some places.

coz of its price and popularity, sometimes tropheus lovers are seen as blind followers who are percieved as ppl who only go blindly for expensive fish.

i've seen quite a few "yawn, its a tropheus again" comments.

i like them a lot. they are wonderful. had a few young ones before but not for long. its a pity.

I keep the yellow labs, a pseudotropheus zebra, and will be adding a male melanchormis johani soon...
i will also be setting up a small 20 gallon high tank for julidochromis species, if i can save the money without spending it!

david : Yep the second tank is a 2ft so its easier to scape with smaller pieces of slate and rock. Got them from H20 at $3/kg. Why not go back to having one tank for africans ?

foxemty : Not that they dont seem popular , in fact most african, central and south american cichlids are not really considered mainstream to most fish keepers.
Moreover they dont come cheap and only a few shops carry them.
But if you are not sure where to get them , i know a couple of shops that have them , like C328 , petmart , rainbow , amazon , soon heng hougang , soon heng Bmerah.

lsz : Yeah , especially love the Dubosis and the Sp. Black ikola.

Mez : I got those you are currently keeping too ! Guess they are the more commonly found ones
Julies dont really appeal to me cos of their arch shape which though unique I dont really appreciate sadly

Yep, in fact I believe sometime pple get into a certain fish because they see that there will be monetary reward/value in that fish. I don't feel thats entirely wrong but it certain should not be the only reason for keeping the fish.

In fact, I noticed that "the fishes" that get wildly popular are always those fishes that generate great commercial value. Its good in a sense that it will generate interest in that fish. It works both way and have a snowball effect,

artvale, I believe thats the reason why real cichlids are not so popular here. Not enough $ [:] Cannot keep any tropheus now, no big tank for them. Hope to keep them again in the future.

Btw I once read that lfs tropheus are vented and mostly only males tropheus are sold, any idea if this true? I'm thinking it should be quite impossible since they are so young.

I almost got them the other time. Yep, they are not cheap and the ones sold are real small. The prices ranges quite drastically for the different form too. You are keeping them right? Are you keeping them alone or with other fishes?
How many are you keeping and whats their size?

Actually my fav africans are tanganyika. They have really weird fishes in this lake []

I am keeping 2 in a 3 foot tank with the N. Brichardis and N.Leleupi. The are about 2 inches. I really like them too.

IMHO, the cliche case with tropheus is not so much with monetary rewards. but rather it is deemed as "The Fish" to get. Mentality is somehow like some ppl keeping discus. some ppl...by no means majority.

i do not know how issit possible for ppl to vent them when they are at the size sold at shops. I had 4duboisi and 2 moorii before. very young , all under 2". Personally i have no clue how to sex them at this size. even if venting, i dont know how to do that.But it is true that it is easier to vent mouthbrooders coz of the larger egg size. But as baby fish, i really dont know how.

however it is true that for certain species, the water parameters will affect the sex of babies in a big way. For eg, the kribensis. It is possible to have a brood of largely predominant babies of a single sex by this way.
