Most importantly, don't use tap water to wash your filter media. Save a pail of your tank water when you change your tank water and use that to rinse the filter media.
If you intend to change any of the biological media, replace only half the old media. Mix the new media with the remaining old media. This is to retain some of the bacteria.

Get sintered glass for bio-media. Just make sure you don't end up with zeolite. There are a few brands out there. Bio-home, IME, you can't mistake for zeolite.
