I have a 2 feet tank and shrimps have been dying despite the fact that the filter has been running for months. Fish seems to thrive pretty well. I dont actually dose fert besides the occassional flourish supplement(not excel)

One thing that i find fishy is that the tiny/small apple snails do thrive in the water, but when i add bigger ones from my other tanks, they seem to die off. I do not think that in this case, its the presence of heavy metal right, since the smaller ones thrive.

Help! any other possible reasons? I do not use test kits, but im open to suggestions!

    Sorry about that!

Tank temp is about 28 degrees and i tried keeping a few batches of cherry shrimps. All died on me after at most afew days. I kept them mainly with ottos. Its an all moss tank and there doesnt seems to be discoloration of water from DW.

Cherries are comparatively hardy among shrimps.
    What is your WC regime?
    Do you dechlorinate?
When was the last time you washed your filter?

I would suggest you stop dosing Flourish for the time being.
Get or borrow a pH pen or test kit to determin the pH.

Flourish might have some issues with shrimps even in small dosage. Alot depends on climatise methods, and water change %. Shrimps have been coming across as hardy, but hardy only in the context of other shrimps not fishes. Comparing both species, fish have much higher tolerance rate to 50% water changes as oppose to shrimps eg.

Ok i will give my most descriptive narration!

I normally wash the bag and dump it into the tank for the temp to stabalise(0.5 - 1 hr).

I will then open the bag and use a small tao huay tub with a hole at the bottom filled with tank water and slowly drip into it.

It will go drop by drop till it fills the whole shrimp bag. I will leave it like that and repeat the process by taking some of the water out of the bag.

100% death rate. I had never washed the filter before except when i bought it a few months back. The last time i took it out, it isnt clogged or anything so i did not wash it.

Help!!!! perhaps i really need a ph pen

what kind of filter do you use?

i guess it most likely the cause.. something in your tank went too high.. like a build up of the waste..

    Here are some questions...

What fishes you have in the tank?
When you bought the shrimps, how are they packed and where do you bought the shrimps from?

And what happened to the 5 shrimps you just put in?
Did you test the pH? You put in ketapang leaves, then you also put in coral chips?
How old is your tank and what soil are you using?

Thanks for the response, there is 3 ottos with the shrimps. Should i take the leaves out? I was told it helps with survival rate.

Tank itself has been running for months. I found a casualty this morning, current strength:1 dead 2 alive and 2 mia.

I couldnt get my hands on a ph pen, so still cant test ph value.

I added slightly more coral chips today. now it covers bout 3/5 of the tray.

    Cherries are rather hardy shrimps.
ketapang leaves will lower pH, making it more acidic, while coral chips increases pH. For what purposes you added the coral chips in?
pH pen could be more pricey, perhaps you can buy the liquid type of pH tester at more affordable price. Not sure how alkaline your water has become with more coral chips.

When was your last water change and %?

Really confused. Why do you want to put coral chips in you filter, if your intention is to keep the cherry shrimps?

And 1000l/hr for a 2ft tank? Is yours standard 2ft or 2x2x2 ft?

Maybe a full tank shot will help.
