Yamato shrimps

Hi all,

As looking for algae eaters, came across yamato shrimps, will like to get it.

But questions is, will my swordtails eat it? As swordtails are my giggest fish in the tanks, follow by spotted catfish.

Never try but it should be ok. What algae do you have because it does not eat all type of algae

Hi Shadow, those that grows on the leaves...... and some on the tank..... sigh..... saw my Corydoras-soorten (Mailed Catfish) eating also.

I doubt a swordtail could eat an adult Yamato shrimp, but they might nibble at one.
Never heard of a spotted catfish, so don't know if it is big enough to swallow a Yamato shrimp.

How many shrimp you should get depends on the size of your tank, and how many fish you already have. I keep 10-15 Yamatos to a 30" Long 150L tank, with 5 or so Otocinculus suckers. That seems to do the trick for most normal algae.

Hair algae is normally a persistent problem if you do not attack the source. Test the water for excess nitrates. Also ensure the water is very clear, and free of excess debris, as this can cause an outbreak of hair algae. Sometimes it appears out of nowhere, and the best thing is to remove it manually with your fingers or some forceps. Algae eating fish and shrimp are great, but they are best at maintaining an aquarium. They do not destroy algae all together, so a combine approach is recommended. Water chemistry, cleanliness, and proper fertilization are still a must.
