Hi can someone advise how long do we require to leave the pump to be ON for the day. Its been two months but I am running the pump for 24hours everyday. Power consumption could be high..I might be silly to ask but I felt its better to learn late than never. I am using a overhead pump for a 2ft Tank. brand is some dyna-xxx i cant remember.

Never off the pump. The BBs will die and your precious fauna will die of ammonia spike soon if your bioload is high. There are chances that the pump will fail to turn ON if you on/off too often. I have this experience before as the pump fail to turn on after I do a major change of water. Better to be safe then never.

They are suppose to on for 24hrs. Some pump are not meant to on and off. It will spoil more easily.

I siwtch off my filter (pump) in feeding time. After all my fishes finished all the food, I switch on the filter again. That's my personal preference. I am not sure any bros out there doing this way.

Off filter during feeding time for like around 30 minutes is acceptable but not more than that. Planted tank still alright if the filter being off for several hours as you have plants inside to help absorbing those "dirt", in fact some low tech planted tank just don't have filter though but not recommend to do so.

My gold fish tank or so called community tank as I had some tetra, cory, snail inside too, the filter was accidently off by my family, just half day only, the glass was full of brown/green algae, I had to do a major water change immediately even filter is turn back on, imagine how dirty the water can be even though it is crystal clear water condition.

Power consumption for pump is not really that high. Base on my eheim liberty, 380 l/h, is 2.5w

Based on bill calculations, 1kw is $0.35 ( bro please verify on this). Base on 1000watt of $0.35 it takes very long to consume a lot of electricity and your bill as well. Unless you use heater or chiller. Which they consume higher watt.

Hi all, can I just ask - If I am not mistaken, you all are talking about a filter pump?

But my question here is about an air pump (pumps only air). My friend told me that the pump should be offed at night so that the fish can rest well as the pump will make the water vibrate and not be still with all that bubbles. And so they cant sleep well. She said as long as the filter is on 24 hours a day, the air pump can be offed at night. Is this true?

Thanks to all in advance (and Happy New Year)
    Ron

If you have a filter running & circulating the water all the time. I don't see there's a need for air pump, unless your filter is the type that depends on air pump to run.

If you intend to introduce CO2 into your tank, then the more, you should remove the pump. Because it will cause the CO2 to dissipate into the environment faster from the water.

only use an air pump if you see any of the fishes gasping for air at the surface (night or early morning as plant ceased photosynthesis during this period - no light).

as for me this happens last time when my filter broke down.....

    cheers!
when theres any doubt, theres no doubt...
