Eheim no questions asked
Hi, I've been reading from the forums and discovered few types of commonly used Canister Filters, namely Eheim, Dophin, Eden and Atman. Eheim is the best i know so far but how about the other 3? Which is better? I would appreciate much if you'd drop your opinion here cause I'm planning to have an affordable one with higher flow rate (above 1000l/hr).
Eheim no questions asked
Just bot a Eheim 2028 pro II spare removable inlet outlet valve because the part snapped when I tried to remove it to wash the canister (about 2 years old). Cost me about $40 bucks. Replaced it last nite and the living room became flooded this morning. The shop said the large O ring could be the cause and would set me back another roughly $30. Since already in the shop also change the 3 filter mats for $15. Total damage S$80+ for DIY mainatainance and no gaurantee it would solve the problem. Fingers crossed.
But I used a similar cheap China imitation for 2 years and when it started to leak the LFS said no spare parts so just throw away. Conclusion, spare very ex, but a least no need to throw away.
Sure...cause it's expensive...heheBut what i mean is other than that. I'm looking for a more affordable type, between Eden, Atman and Dophin...and maybe Jebo too. Any suggestions?
Ya, agree with what you say, but one of my LFS here told me Dophin spare parts are available easily in JB. But not sure of it's effectiveness and performance. That's why I'm posting to see if you guys you help me out.
I am very happy with the price and performance of both my Atmans.
CF-600 and CF-1000 but parts can sometimes be hard to find here in Singapore.
Besides looking at availability of spare parts, others factor you want to look at would be things like
1. power consumption
2. the built of the canister. (Some lesser brands can be rather flimsy)
3. how silent the filter is
I am currently using a dolphin canister (c-700 I think) and I am quite satisfied with it.
However, it consumes more electricity compared to some other filters of equal flow rate and spare parts are not available.
For a made in China filter, it is surprisingly quite well built and priming is easy.
I had it for 3 years already, though I must admit, I seldom perform any maintenance.
I am basically waiting for it to expire *touch wood* after which I plan to replace it with the exact same model, if I am still keeping the tank.
Some common tricks and know-how can greatly prolong the lifespan of your canister filters.
For example, never restrict flow at the inlet of your filter, protecting the o-rings with vaseline, these all helps.

The only advantage that Eheim has is probably the spare parts, but again with the money you need to throw into the spare parts, you could probably buy a brand new Taiwan or China brand. cannisters are very simple equipment, its all in the power head, the rest are just simple gravity doing its work, with today's technology, i think brands like Atman, Dolphin or Dymax are not too far behind.
Well if Eheim's only advantage is just spare parts then seriously the rest of it competitor would have catch up by now (Not diff to produce spare parts).
I would say the long lasting reliability and durability makes Eheim No. 1. Which no other brands can actually match to it yet. Equipment may look simply but to but to build a 500lt/hr running at 5-8W is something the other brands do not have for now.![]()

Hi all, thanks much for sharing your thoughts. I'm still confused qith which to go since i have a very limited budget. Maybe i'll just keep looking in the marketplace, hoping some bro out there would be generous enough to give a good deal. Thanks to all again.
What is your budget exactly,? you might just be able to get a new Taiwan/china brand cannister, and they are really not as bad as it sounds.
EddyTing, you'll now have 2 choices now.
1) Buy the Eheim and used it for x amount of years and buy a few spare part for it.
2) Buy 2 of those made in China canister filter and keep 1 as standby in case the 1st one spoilt. Then keep buying another 1 canister filter the same model again as spare.
Hope this helps!
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.

Mohamad Rohaizal is my name. If it's too hard, use BFG. I don't mind.
Hi newtank, my budget is about S$120. You've mentioned Taiwan/China brand, any in specific you've experienced?
Hi BFG, thanks for your advice. Eheim is my favorite of course, but haven't try any taiwan/china brand filter just yet. As I've mentioned earlier, maybe I'll just wait in the marketplace, maybe I'll have some luck after CNY...hehe. Thanks bro...cheers
I have been using jebo, its oversized for my 2 feet, but i just cut the rain bar and face it inwards towards glass. It seems pretty trust worthy with priming and best of all its alot cheaper bout $50
I am using a Dymax one for 18 months now, no issue of leaking although its getting a bit cranky. I like the priming function though.
For 120 bucks, you can actually add another 10 bucks to your budget and get an eheim classic 2217 which has a flow rate of 1000 l per hour.
You can also get a Atman for about 80 bucks.
as for the issue of reliability, you really have to decide for yourself if you want to pay more for reliability.
Eheim no questions asked but expensive, depend on how u see it. Currently am using Dolphin C-1000 (been with it for nearly a year) so far so good. Silent, no problem. Let's say a Dolphin cost $90/- and used for 2 yrs or 21/2 yrs, then u buy a 'new' one with about same price, (so that mean every 2 to 2 1/2yrs cost u $90) and Eheim cos few hundres but last longer but need to buy spare part which cost alots more but it still consider old set no matter how new the spare part is.
